OG FF7 mechanics detectives needed.

Hello folks, I'm doing an "item only" run, and running into a mechanic I can't explain.

Fighting ruby weapon I have several counter > mime materia stacks. I'll use w-item to use a healing and damage item in one turn, but after a few mimes, my character will only use the second of the two items used with the w-item. Any idea why this is happening, or if there is a fix for this?

All of my searches have turned up nothing similar.

I dropped this by the exceptionally deep well of FF7 mechanics knowledge that is @Phantasm over on Discord & he confirmed that, unfortunately using W-Item with Counter + Mime is bugged after a certain point.

When equipping multiple Counter + Mime Materia combinations, only the first activation will be MP-free and retain any special effects from Materia links (such as HP Absorb, MP Absorb, Added Cut, etc.), the rest will cost MP and will lose any special effects. In this case, it's used with W-Item, which allows two items to be used in a single turn and doesn't work as intended because it's bugged. As observed, only the first instance maintains the special effects, while the rest simply mimic the last action–without any additional effects.

Hopefully that provides some clarity / validation to the issue you're running into.
