Just a suggestion / thingy I think I've discussed with other people somewhere else a while ago.
The base idea is that, when a thread reaches a certain amount of posts, it's closed and a 'version 2.0' of the thread is started. There's a few reasons for such an idea:
* It gives a chance to re-create the first post of a long-running thread, in particular the ones that have a lot of discussion or information in them. The first post would be re-written by a member and would contain a lot of high-quality information about the thread itself. This information could contain the news about the topic at hand, a FAQ, links to information to those not initiated, imagery, rules of conduct / policy of the thread, assistance, etcetera. See here for a Dutch example of a long-running thread with 188 iterations. On there, threads are closed and re-created when they reach 1000 posts.
* It gives some performance benefits. Although this isn't much, I must add, and only applies to older forms of storage. On the site linked above, there's some topics asking about the 'close / v2.0' policy, and the staff in there stated that there's only a noticeable reduction in performance if a thread reaches 50.000 posts or more - which would equate to a thread with 3333 pages (in the default 15 posts / page setting) on here. So that's not really a factor to consider here.
I'd personally like to see a trial of this one. Here's a bit of a question / assignment: If you had to re-start a thread, how would you make its first post better?
Anyone have any other bright ideas? Opinions? This is just an idea btw, nothing definitive, .
