I barely remember the original film, but I had this story book thing as an infant, which I think had audio accompaniment ("turn the page when you hear this sound: *magical ring sound*" 
). I don't have clear memories of that either. I always thought the "puff the magic dragon" song was from this movie for example, but apparently not . Never believe in your memories, especially if they're mine

I think I've probably seen the entirety of Pete's Dragon... once. And even then it was only something that seems like I watched it in passing, as I have no feelings or memories associated with it, other than the fact that I always strongly disliked the design of the dragon itself (especially because I absolutely loved dragons as a little kid).
Because of that, I'm rather looking forward to this based on the trailer, and the dragon design seems more... dragonic(?) and I would've LOVED the look of this as a kid.

I remember being terrified by this movie. The Gogans, this rag tag hillbilly family, Dr Terminus, who bargins with the Gogans to use Pete and lure out Elliot, this weird, constantly dirty little kid that isn't exactly charming or likeable, Mickey Rooney.... *shudders*

I haven't seen the original 1977 film, but it never really interested me. I don't think this remake will do so well. It's already bad enough that they changed Kaa into a girl in the upcoming Jungle Book remake.

Am I the only one who watched this all the time as a kid? :/ I'm learning more and more, as I talk to more people about Pete's Dragon, that practically no one seems to like this movie.
For me, the 2 biggest things I loved about the original were Doc Terminus, and Elliot.
Doc's completely out of this, which bums the hell out of me. Sure a lot of it is because of the actor doing a fantastic job, but I really like the character. His absence is understandable though, I mean his goal in the movie is to kill Elliot and sell his body parts for medicine to make some cash. Difficult to sell in a kids movie these days.
For Elliot.. well, we haven't seen anything really, so I'll leave most it it until we get a good look at him, but from what we've seen he looks pretty... generic. Yup, he's a dragon. Original Elliot had little touches to him which let the animators have some fun, and give him little things to add some character. Like the tip of his tail having some little finger like appendages, which it doesn't look like he has in the teaser. Just looks like a green dragon, without any real defining characteristics.
I guess that's what I'm missing from the teaser (granted, it is just a teaser) that was in the original. Personality.
Anyway.. I'll shut up about this now.

I actually don't think I've ever seen the original movie, so I have no expectations. 
It might not even be good, but it interests me because yes it's about a dragon.
The trailer doesn't show much though; to me, the story presented from the trailer seems to be all about finding this boy and his dragon friend, so I'm curious what more will actually be in the story. I'm guessing something like they'll introduce the boy to society, take him from the woods, he ends up leaving said dragon friend in the end because they're supposed to live different lives, ect. Or something.

Nah, I'm pretty sure there are others like you who have seen the movie. It's like how I'm having a bit of a similiar problem with FFVII Compilation or the recent thread I just posted yesterday, Ice Age 5: Collision Course.
I haven't seen the original film myself, but I can understand how you're feeling.

I think that I have such a big disconnect with things like this because I literally grew up without a tv from the time I was about... 7-8 until I was 18, so even the media I did see, I never really had the same sort of attachment to that you get growing up around things. I also think that's why you'll see me being vastly more positive insofar as the live-action films are concerned.
I am always really interested to see how folks like you who grew up around it feel, so despite the fact that you're in the minority, I think that your opinion is especially important & I don't want ya to feel discouraged from posting about the things that you feel are missed from the original.

Schmaltzy as fuck, very little levity, Elliot just acts like a big dog even though he's smart enough to understand human concepts (which wouldn't be bad, but it's not done nearly as well as something like How To Train Your Dragon), in your face soundtrack, some spoiler stuff that just spits in the face of physics in order to create peril.
For the good stuff.. Robert Redford does his Robert Redford thing. Bryce Dallas Howard is good. There's one part where Pete is trapped and howling like a wild child, and the adults there all have a sad/pitying look on their faces that really got to me.
There was one part where Elliot was splashing in the water that was well done, but for the most part that's really all the interacting he does with the real world, outside of Pete hugging him.
It's... Eh. I got bored. Just a typical boy and his dog mixed with "they don't understand so they're gonna hunt him". There's shots like, someone's looking at something and shakes their head in disbelieving horror. A "what have we become..?" type look.
Bleh..
