While I know this is the 20th movie of the franchise, and this is supposed to be the first film of the Sun and Moon series of Pokemon, with possibly Ash telling his school mates in Alola about how he and Pikachu first met and ect., there's something that they've messed up with his hat design in the trailer compared to his original hat's design from season 1 all the way to the flashbacks of season 16.

I don't know about you guys, but this just screams a reboot to me, just like with the new Sailor Moon Crystal Anime and with Final Fantasy VII Remake(I'm still calling it a reboot even though I'm hoping against hope for the Compilation to continue after the Remake).

What are your thoughts?

"Sailor Moon Crystal" is a reboot, yeah, intended to be a more faithful adaptation of the manga. Something like this, though, doesn't necessarily have to be.

In general, Japanese production companies aren't terribly concerned with the fine details of continuity even when a new production is in continuity with an older one. While it's frustrating, particularly to those of us in the West accustomed to more stringent notions of continuity, it doesn't necessarily mean there's anything to be read into it as you are here.

Look at "Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz," the OVA/movie that served as a sequel and finale to the "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing" TV series. It features heavily redesigned depictions of the Gundams, but as the viewer, you're supposed to just pretend they've always looked like that.

I know that Sailor Moon Crystal is a reboot, and I know how reboots go, but I'm just saying that this new Pokemon movie that's coming out next year, doesn't it feel like a reboot to you?

Especially how they changed the front part design of Ash's Kanto hat. In the previous seasons of Pokemon, sure they redesigned Ash's eyes in flash-backs during season 16 of Pokemon but never re-did his hat design.

They say that this is the first film of the Sun and Moon series, and I was thinking that Ash would tell his School mates about his past, but, the way how they re-did his hat, I'm thinking that, while the Sun and Moon series goes on, they're rebooting the series at the same time.

I know this is stupid, but hey, look at Square Enix. They haven't even confirmed whether the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII is continuing or not and they're doing the Remake(Reboot in my opinion despite the Compilation content that is-hopefully but most likely not T^T-to be put into the game).

Personally, if I want to re-visit Ash and Pikachu's meeting and first journey, I'd just go back to watching the entire series from the start all over again, starting with episode one.

I don't think it's a reboot, it's a retelling of the first episode. FFVII Remake is a nice comparison I suppose; which they are expanding that part of the story and making it prettier as a film. I personally am looking forward to it and curious what they do with it.

Ash's Hat from the first season(well, from the Mewtwo Returns, but you get the idea).

Compared to now.

If it's not a reboot, then somebody surely screwed up his original hat's design. (Tried to make this one smaller, but for some reason, it won't let me).

Yeah it used to look like the Lexus symbol. It really depends how you look at it. I think it's the equivalence of Cloud's belt being redesigned. This movie is a celebration of the original series. Some changes, some additions, which can be cool. Funny thing is that I hate the Sun & Moon designs though.

Admittedly, I've never heard of Lexus.

That's true. Plus, don't forget how they redesigned the Buster Sword in the Compilation which I like better than the original design which they're using again for the remake.

Yeah, funny enough, the series started the same year as when Final Fantasy VII first came out, and despite the remake not coming out for it's 20th Anniversary, it's still awesome.

Heh, both the original Sailor Moon anime, the Aladdin film, the Ferngully film, and myself are all the same age, so I celebrated 20 years of my life with these three back in 2014.

Funny thing is that I hate the Sun & Moon designs though.

You'll find that a lot of people hate the Sun and Moon designs, because I most definately do. It was bad enough that they changed Ash's eyes in season 14, but they just completely ruined him and everyone else now in Sun and Moon.

It looks like it doesn't have the shitty Sun/Moon animation so automatically this is superior.

We haven't seen what Ash would look like in the film yet and the poster doesn't count as much since it's art style is similiar to the 2D photos in the recent Pokemon games.

Let's hope that it'll be much better than the crappy animation of the Sun and Moon series. They should've at least sticked to the animation from XY and use parts of the storyline from the games instead of the storyline in the series right now.

Confirmed a Reboot because 1: Ash's Kanto Clothes were re-designed, and 2...No Misty and Brock.

Here's why as this second trailer came out just two hours ago.

While I am disappointed that Misty and Brock aren't coming back and the storyline is different, at least Piplup's in this movie, and the character designs are 100 times better than the current character designs of the Sun and Moon Anime that's going on.

Remake Movie Design.

Sun and Moon Anime Design.

I think we can all agree that the upcoming movie wins hands down.

So, despite the several downsides of this film(since like Final Fantasy VII Remake-AKA: REBOOT-, this too is a reboot), I'm actually looking forward to this.

FFVII: Remake isn't a reboot. It doesn't divert the path from the original, it'll start in the same place, end in the same place, follow to the same character ectera. Stuff'll be different, that's not a reboot. The Compilation didn't reboot Nibelheim every time they changed the details of what happened. Ash making it to Viridian without encountering Misty is definitely a reboot.

Yeah, well, despite what Nomura said in not having the Remake directly connected to the Compilation, because he obviously thought Remastering the three games of the Compilation is like creating a new Compilation(Personally, I think is still stupid because they're the same games just on different platforms-like how they kept on Remastering the previous Kingdom Hearts games for different platforms) and yes will it would cause confusion to newer fans, he forgets that there are older fans who still stick to the series, I still hope that at least it'll still be referenced in Parts 2 and 3, and possibly 4.

Ash making it to Viridian without encountering Misty is definitely a reboot.

This again is a bit of a bummer, and surprisingly, not a lot of people like Misty. Misty is one of the most favorited female trainers out and not to have her or Brock in this is like no one wants to remember them. Sure Ash will always be the main protagonist, but they can't just have him or Team Rocket all the time, right?

Despite this though, I'm willing to give it a try because it looks like it's gonna be a good film. And that old guy who is apparently the first version of Red from the Red and Blue(Green in Japanese Release) games and is named Bonzi in Japan. Not sure if this is an older version of Red or not, but he suddenly strikes me as being the movie's main antagonist.

I actually find the sun/moon art style really charming.

If that's what you think, then that's okay. Everyone has different likings, after all.

Me, I think Ash's current design in Sun/Moon's art style looks like his face that smooshed several times while taking some surgery for a face-plant or something. I'm avoiding it like how I avoided Black & White series.

In the upcoming "I Choose You" movie on the other hand, it's grown onto me fairly quickly and I like how they made it as though they combined Ash's first season art design and XY/Z art design, and it's a lot better too.
