So I've got an SNES emulator now and I want to start trying some old-school rpgs aside from Final Fantasy or Chrono Tigger. Now most of you guys have played more games than I have, so I was wondering what old school rpgs you guys would suggest.

Breath of Fire 1 and 2
Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, in that order.
In line with the PSSMAS RPG, there's actually a rather good Ranma 1/2 RPG and a MKR RPG for SNES that were translated.
Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3.

Are you open to non RPG suggestions as well?

Char: Lunar is a massive Duh, but he's limited to an SNES emulator.
And the GBA Lunar, emulatable as it is, would be a poor introduction to the series.

In minor addenda to Char's above, you'll need a Sega CD capable emulator, since Lunar Silver Star Story was released for that rather than the regular Genesis. I recommend Silver Star Story Complete and Eternal Blue for the PSX, however, as they're much better games.

Silver Star Harmony for the PSP is also good.

...I need to find a Rom of Lunar Magic Academy.

Thanks for all these suggestions guys. I'm surprised at how many of these gmes I didn't know existed.

@Ryu: I'd be open to non-rpgs, but they would be probably be secondary to rpgs.

Then you definitely want to grab Link to the Past, the Donkey Kong Country series, Metal Warrior game and Cybernator (or Assault Suits Valken, it's nearly identical but slightly different JP counterpart which is now available in English)

Also, Umihawakarase (Spelling may be incorrect. I may have transposed a syllable) which is a very interesting wire physics puzzle platformer which is easy to win but hard to play.

Also, Megaman 7 and Rockman and Forte.

Give me some time to rack my brains, I can probably weigh in on the whole of the SNES library, give or take.

Earth-fucking-bound.
seriously, this is one of the absolute greatest RPGs you can ever play. It has a silly, self-depreciating humor you rarely find with other games, it's ridiculously fun and JESUS H. SULLIVAN the final boss is so absolutely terrifying.

Pretty much one of the best games ever, not just for the SNES.

Minor tangent, of the EB idolaters in here, who's sat down and played Mother? It's in English now! Okay, that's a lie. It's been in English since the 80s. For some reason, a fully functional English Mother cart was created and ready for shipping, and then.... nothing. It's weird.

Mother 3 has also been fan translated, if you were wondering.

Oh, the Megaman X series of games are good fun, as well.
As a rule, if it has Capcom and is on the SNES, it's fun. There are exceptions to this rule, but they are not terribly common.

I've also played Mother 3 (it was one of the absolute best I've ever played, and it was absolutely heartbreaking once you reach the end), but not Mother 1.

I've also played Mother 3 as well.

It is also ridiculously heartbreaking. That game has more emotion than some of the big hitters, I swear. Mother 3 has heart. Earthbound has soul.

They're both classics.

Mother is much the same as 2 and 3, just less so due to the limitations of the medium and them not knowing where to go, exactly.

It's also a lot, lot meaner. Never have cash on hand to avoid losing it all. You'll die. A lot. To dogs. In your front yard.

Ok, noob question. How do I the ROM to work. Do I have to move it to a specific folder?

Open up the ROM in the emulator. You don't have to move it a specific folder unless you find it convenient; the program asks you to browse for it.
