Remake Merchandise (Unofficial/Unlicensed)

Been wanting to make this thread for a while now, but because procrastination... yeah.

Since we are seeing an uptick of Remake/FFVII merch, I'd like to designate this thread for all the unofficial and unlicensed merch, to include the crazy awesome statues, stuff you may find on Etsy/the interweebz that you just want to share, etc.

And also because I'd like to see some separate between official/unofficial stuff so that the other remake merchandise thread isn't bogged down by stuff that's not actually made by Square.

I'll be making some posts with all of the Tifa and Aerith statues out there, where you can preorder them, price differences, etc. There are some that I definitely need in my collection.

I kinda surprised Square doesn't nuke this stuff from orbit lol. I have to imagine they make a decent little chunk of profit from the remake by way of their own figure and statue sales. I guess as a peddler of unofficial ff7 stuff myself, I should be grateful they're so lenient.

I'll compile these into a master post maybe, for now I'm getting the show on the road.

First up is this lovely Aerith statue in her Wall Market attire from Super Time Studio!

She is listed for 14,800 baht at Toys Overzone which roughly equates to $470 USD (according to the google currency whatsit), not including shipping.

Also available in white (LE 99) for all of your 'waifu is laifu' needs.

Most of these are crafted in China or Southeast Asia and good luck enforcing copyright there lol

Also these are so expensive and limited in number, that trying to stomp these out would only give them more publicity and popularity. They're essentially custom artworks, they don't make that much money off the sale of these. Like, this probably the best example of transformative, labor intensive artwork based on IPs that should most certainly be acceptable. It's certainly better than just folks doing the usual "steal/scavenge factory molds from figure manufactures to print bootlegs" that you'd usually see. These works are legit.

I find pretty much all of SE's merchandising is uninspired, which is odd coming from a creative company. I have bought some play arts figures but that's about it. Fan produced stuff is usually more original and more interesting. Remember that guy who made 3D printed polygon figures and sold them on Etsy? SE stole his idea, but he produced a wider range and they looked nicer.

I don't understand why they don't sell posters of the BC promotional art, or the loading screen art from the OG, or design sketches. Wouldn't people buy those things?

Can I have a lingerie version of Tseng and Rufus pls thank you?

il;dr - SE's merchandising department hardly ever produces anything I want to buy.

So you're saying they need to do a Jessie statue with optional clothes-less swap.

There are dozens of wonderful designs on Redbubble. And what's great, the majority of designs can be printed on numerous types of products: not only T-shirts, tank tops, and longsleeves, but also pins, prints, coasters, socks, pillows, stickers and whatnot, depending on what the artist has enabled. Ripping pictures seems to be a bit problematic, so I'll just leave some links. The only issue with this shop is that even if you pay for all your orders at once, they ship them separately because their printing facilities are scattered around the world, so some specific orders may take forever to be delivered.

Collectables in general, or Cloud?
I'm not super into collectables myself - it's a rabbit hole and I'm a minimalist. Tho I really wanted my mini Turks.

I quite like the play arts, but what I really want are polygonal Turks and Rufus.
They create so much really beautiful, interesting art for these games, and I just don't understand why they don't sell them as posters.

Keep in mind, that's just the 3D model for the statue... The actual mold may look better... or worse.

This was the first statue I'd seen that not only featured all three protags, but had a premise other than sexy posing.

Yeah I know it's just a mock up, that doesn't give me much hope though because in most cases the mock up looks better.
There are a lot of little thing I could point out (why is Cloud looking up and to the right when his sword is pointed directly forward?) but I think the main thing that's bothering me is the hair. They have these really realistic faces, but the hair looks like rubbery plastic without much depth. The PAKs have better looking hair than that, and they're cheaper.

Also they left out Barret. Unforgivable.

Tifa's skirt is wrong. It lacks movement and it's stretched in a way leather doesn't.

It's a just render made with Blender and some postproduction work. I wouldn't trust whatever they 3D print or cast to look better than this. If anything, it will look worse.

I have no idea why y'all are shading these artists, because they've done some of the best 3rd party unofficial statues out there. F4 Studio is one of the best groups out there who does this.

This is the kind of energy and effort that's gonna go into that Cloud, Tifa and Aerith design. This circle doing an FFVII-R product is literally the type of statue I've been dreaming of since it's actually dynamic and not just a simple pin-up of the two women characters. Yeah, the render is an obvious mock up but going by their previous work? There's absolutely no reason to think they'll mess it up. Their statues sell out at thousands of dollars for a reason. They don't play games with their work.

Those dbz statues look fine (except Goku and Gohan they look pretty derp there), and a lot more dynamic than this one is. You want it? Go get it. I'm not gonna stop you.

That hair just clashes so bad with the rest of the aesthetic. Why can I see Cloud's individual eyelashes but his hair is a giant plastic blob? Toriyama's style doesn't have those issues, but it doesn't work with the remake's style. That's why the PAKs go out of their way to give hair more texture. I also just think the shapes of their faces look really off, especially Cloud and Aerith.

No need to go so far on the defensive over this just yet. It was only pointed out that none of us have seen the actual sculpt, on which your self-identified main issue with the concept render (the hair) may be textured drastically differently than it was here, where it didn't need to be especially detailed even if it will be in reality later.

I see this render as basically comparable to green screen footage without post-production effects. I gather that you see it as comparable instead to a best-case possible result that is being aimed for but is unlikely to be achieved. That's fair. Of course, even if I'm correct, the actual thing may still not work for you for some reason. That's also totally fair. Sometimes post-production effects detract further from authenticity rather than add to it.

With that and a reminder for us all that different styles resonate with different people for different reasons, let's make the effort to celebrate these differences -- or at least not crap on them overly much. I had to bite my own tongue (fingers?) so as to not say that I wouldn't even put the images at some of those Redbubble links on toilet paper.
