Sega still cares--Valkyria Chronicles porting to PC

Sega appears to have a PC port of Valkyria Chronicles in the works, according to a recent rating listed by European classification authority PEGI.

The tactical role-playing game initially released on PlayStation 3 in 2008, and garnered a cult following on the back of its lush, watercolor-like visuals and imaginative combat system. While by no means a chart topper, Valkyria Chronicles was a modest success, leading to a pair of sequels on PSP, the second of which (tragically) never made it out of Japan.

Valkyria Chronicles draws inspiration from World War II, taking place in a small, peaceful nation caught up in a conflict between two neighboring superpowers. The series focuses on small ragtag groups of soldiers who, against all odds, always seem to find a way to repel the invaders spilling over their borders.

Hopefully the game finds a new audience on PC, because it sure would be nice to see Sega make (and localize!) a few more of these wonderful, beautifully awesome things.

Hopefully this will roll some Steam money out for a trilogy release? Or that HD Skies of Arcadia they were talking about for awhile?

Also, would cry tears of happiness if 2 and 3 were also in the PC release. ;_;

D'you know what, if my laptop can run it I'm actually going to buy this on PC. Which will make it the first PC game I've ever bought aside from a second hand copy of the '98 version of FFVII I found in a random game shop :monster:

EDIT: As a footnote, SEGA have confirmed this. Also, their PC ports are stellar in general. The Sonic Generations port ran at 60fps (original console versions were 30 of course) and had every graphics option imaginable.

I finished this game yesterday and can I just say

Yeah I'm still an emotional wreck

And it's not just the very well written story (even for the occasional (or more) JP trope), it's an exceptionally pretty game art direction wise, and the gameplay is refreshing - don't expect a full third party shooter though; it's still a turn based JRPG, but a very good one at that.

I think I was the one that convinced fangu to play it initially actually (or i ranted about how good it was then told her the same composer does FFXII's music then shared a youtube link... same thing) so you might say I'm the puppet master here

I just know yop doesn't respond to direct commands influence, there are always other channels one must go through :D

Next stage of plan, make Yop buy a PS4

This, but it also needs to be said I'd heard of the game before Lex talked about it - around its launch time, actually, because it received such good critics and I think one Norwegian newspaper gave it a really high score - I remember looking at the art and a video going 'wow, that's insanely good art, a perfect blend of 3D and anime'.

But then it was Lex who, a few years later, linked me the soundtrack since it's XII's composer and I heard this

and I was sold. I knew I would play this game for the soundtrack alone, if I didn't enjoy the story or gameplay. And then when I reblogged that song, someone on Tumblr recommended the game as well, and then I put it on my list, leading to purchasing it off Amazon.

But yes. The music was what made me eventually decide I needed to play it. And it is a magnificent soundtrack.

Reading that was like music to my soul. To think that gen pop might finally experience the Light of God that is Valkyria Chronicles honestly has made my evening.

PLAY IT AND LOVE IT ALL BEINGS MWAHAHA

So I just got this for Steam, having never played or even heard of it before. Any pointers or information you guys want to give me now? ;)

Pointers: Aim for the head with scouts, aim for the chest with Shocktroopers at a distance because that'll usually whack them in the head a good few times :D.

EDIT: SAVE OFTEN. THE GAME DOES NOT HAVE AUTOSAVE

Do skirmishes as often as you can and try to use everyone evenly to unlock all of their potentials! Some of them have really shitty personal potentials (I AM LOOKING AT YOU SUSIE AND HERBERT JESUS) but the others are obviously worth it.

Stock up on Command Points -- Tanks use two at a time and at the early point in the game it's kinda easy to run out of them...Also, always have the leaders deployed for extra CP. (and try not to have them KO'd. They don't die, but you lose the bonus CP.)
Also, always take out the enemy Leader for bonus points and lowering their CP.

Getting some characters (Oscar and Karl) downed/KO/KIA (if you're sadistic and let them die on the battlefield...which I can never bring myself to do...) will also unlock other characters: Emile and Lynn.

Certain characters become available for choice later - they're unlocked randomly. I like having Vyse and Aika from Skies of Arcadia on my squad (they also "like" each other in the sense of the combat mechanics) and I find that Aika is usually available early on whereas Vyse becomes available later, but this changes in every playthrough (it's RNG pretty much). However it doesn't really matter a lot, they all have their quirks and one-liners.

For the love of god, pick Jann. Always pick Jann and always put him in with Largo, because his dialogue is hilarious during battles (if a bit stereotypical, but it's still funny).

I didn't do Skirmishes - I only did the first battle 3 times or so to have enough DCT for Miss Ellet's Reports :P Which, in addition to being funny and/or provides some nice backstory to some of the characters, also give great DCT and EXP, so I'd recommend getting them when they become available. (They unlock by story progression.)

Yes. Always deploy Rosie, Largo and Alicia if you can fit them in.

Alicia is really useful in the second half of the game, because she has some really nice Potentials. I usually kept her in my battles anyway because... it's Alicia. :joy:

Also:

  • Yoko is really handy against tanks (same with Jann) but unlike Jann, she "hates" Largo (because he reminds her of her late husband, snif) so better not keep them next to each other.
  • Try to explore the "likes" powers as much as possible, i.e. put people who like each other physically close. Not only does it increase the chance for Potential, but it can also affect the attacks...
  • If you have a pretty clear idea on what you need to do in a battle, use Orders! I didn't use them until the very end of the game, but they can be really really useful.
  • Around mid-game, spend your EXP on your Shocktroopers and Lancers. You'll need it! I'd get my Shocktroopers to lvl 10 quite early if possible, it unlocks some preeeeetty handy stuff.
  • When you meet Zaka, explore his weapon alternatives. Just sayin'. ;)
  • If you want to cruise through your first playthrough (or shit just gets hard, which it will) play the DLC's. Apparently they unlock a pretty wicked weapon. (I haven't played them myself.) I'd recommend not playing them until about chapter 12ish though, due to:
  • AVOID STORY SPOILERS!!! This game is packed with surprises, and I am SO GLAD I didn't know any of them before setting out. Learning by surprise was a blast!

I forgot to mention you can level up really easily using skirmishes when you're a bit into the game. The Windmill Plaza (Normal) skirmish can be completed in one turn with a Scout (use Alisha) in less than 5 minutes when you're not even that levelled. The order "Defense Boost" means she can just run to the flag and kill the enemies there without any trouble. You can do it without Defense Boost but it's a little riskier. In New Game + you unlock hard and you can literally just run Rosie to a flag in 2 turns without doing anything else (no shooting, no orders, no anything) and it takes about 30 seconds to complete, but by NG+ I'd already maxed all my classes because the Windmill Plaza thing isn't boring and the game doesn't need a lot of grinding to level up to max. I might record a video of it actually.

Yes this, but the Scouts are just as important so I tend to level up all 3 simultaneously. Shocktroopers will destroy everything (there's even an order you can give them so that they can blow up tanks, they're so OP'd with it).

Snipers are fun to use too but I tend to wait until later so that their attacks never miss (Marina is win for that).

*grumble* Well maybe if you had acknowledged it's release with any sort of fanfare or attention it would have done better at the beginning you idiots. And we'd have some real sequels!:wallbanger:

No, I will not get over this.

I agree, but look on the bright side - there's always a chance that since this is doing so well they'll consider porting 2 and FINALLY 3!! VCII is a great game btw, but I'm still struggling to get through it because I don't like playing VC on a handheld. VCIII was never released in the west which grinds my gears and is part of why I haven't bothered finishing VCII. Also my problem with II is that it has anime cutscenes instead of the 3D watercolour anime style that 1 had. I just hope that if they do release the other two that it's not solely on PC since apparently my laptop can't play them.

I desperately desperately need to build a new PC and have done for a very long time, I just never have any effing money to do it. When I do have the cash there's always something more important to spend it on (car, debt, rent, repairs). Drives me nuts.

Double Growth
The graphics are a MAJOR part of it bothered me so much. I like my PSP, but I knew it couldn't handle the gorgeous graphics and art style the PS3 had, which was a huge part of the appeal. And it was like an admissjon from them that people didn't like the game that much, but again, some advertisement would have helped. The PS3 was really hurting for JRPGs at the time and they refused to capitalize on it.

The advertising was a problem but I don't think Sega have been in a position to launch a large advertising campaign for any of their games for a long time. It's very possible that they knew the game was going to do well in Japan and the West was an afterthought (as with most Japanese games) so they just didn't bother.

They absolutely should have, because there was a massive gap in the market at that time that this game would have filled. I've said this numerous times before but I found this game in a bargain bin for £2 and bought it purely because I liked the cover and I'd never seen it anywhere before. When I bought my PS3 I went through 5 or 6 top ten games lists and went out and bought a shitload of pre-owned games, Valkyria Chronicles wasn't mentioned on any of them. I just picked it up because it was so cheap and the cover looked kind of pretty, I didn't even read the back. I didn't even play it until months later. I still feel so lucky that this happened because if it hadn't I would never have played this amazing game <3.
