Sephiroth's parentage (obvious spoilers)

Someone claims that, in Dirge of Cerberus, it is implied that Vincent is actually Sephiroth's biological father (not Hojo). Does anyone have a legit, canonical source (preferably an Ultimania) proving who Sephiroth's father is?

Every reliable sources states that Hojo is Sephiroth's father. The idea of Vincent being his sire is another one of those myths caused by FFVII many plot holes. It's as old as the game, in fact. The only argument that suport it is that Sephiroth and vincent have similar physical trait. Trouble with this is that Sephiroth actually resembles Jenova, as it makes most of is genetic code, and nobody else.

Thanks. Could I have some official sources? Even though Final Fantasy VII explicitly states that Hojo is the father, these morons are saying, "Oh, well Hojo just SAID he's the father, it doesn't prove anything." >_>

I think this comes from the English Lucretia dialogue, actually. I'm not sure how it is in Japanese, but after a series of scenes implying a heavy romantic tryst between Vincent and Dr. Crescent, Lucretia reveals she is pregnant and that the baby will be part of Hojo's work. (If I recall correctly, this is sometime after said tryst comes to an end) When Vincent expresses outrage, Lucretia pointedly says that it's her choice, because "It's not as if the father is around".

My understanding is that she only said this to hurt him though, and that according to the original FFVII canon Hojo is the father. Then again, the Ultimania also disagrees with the game and says that Hojo drugged her into participating in his experiments while the game shows her to be a lucid, willing participant.

It's likely the result of the DoC team forgetting that they'd already made a canon statement about the paternity.

I can find no record of this conversation. Where are you remembering it from?

This is the closest the English DoC script has:

Vincent: Is it true?
Hojo: Is what true?
Vincent: That Lucrecia... That Dr. Crescent is to take part in this project?
Lucrecia: It's true. [She walks into the room]
Lucrecia: Why are you so surprised?
Vincent: But using your own child for an experiment?
[Hojo goes "Hah!]
Hojo: I don't know what you're implying, but both of us are scientists. We know what we are doing.
Hojo: You are the last person to have any word in this. Now leave us at once, boy!
Vincent: But...
Lucrecia: But what?
Lucrecia: If you have something to say, say it.
Vincent: Are you... Are you sure this is what you really want?
Lucrecia: Am I sure? Am I sure!? If this only concerns me, then yes, I am sure!
Vincent: I just...
[Vincent stares at the ground, and thinks the following]
Vincent: All I did was watch.
Vincent: I didn't even try to stop her.

You're thinking of some Early Material Files ideas that weren't included in the final canon. Lucrecia was always a willing participant in the published materials, and Hojo has always been Seph's father (constantly referred to as such in official books).

I don't really think there's anything stupid about either theory Matt, they could both be entirely plausible if they hadn't been debunked. The first time I read the Ultimecia=Rinoa theory I did so with my skeptical frown on, and it blew me away.

Hojo is his dad, but my question is did he even know that Hojo was his biological father? In CC Sephiroth pretty much hated him or didn't like him in some way. I know he liked Gast theories a bit which made me wonder if he thought Gast was his dad.

I was in the Vincent-is-the-father camp from 2001 until some point when I stopped caring. I think I still am in the Rinoa=Ultimecia camp, as non-canon as it is.

That might be where it's from. It does sound familiar. To be fair, though, I haven't play DoC in years so I was paraphrasing how the line came across.

And I see. I've only ever seen bits and pieces of the Ultimania translated in various places, so I've never actually known what was canon and what was "We thought about doing this".

Sephiroth didn't know Hojo was his father, though he probably did after absorbing the knowledge of the lifestream, but at that point in time he wouldn't've cared because he was insane.

we already have a thread about this, Metal Heart. it's the 'Gast absence in the compilation'.
My bad. Sorry! I'll continue it there then.

It would be a weird twist if Vincent was the dad in the end. It would turn the whole thing into something corny and weird since I still see Vincent as a virgin, but that's a different topic...
