Still, they'd have to pretty much rewrite the entire source code, or at least figure out enough from the binaries in order to make the fixes needed for modern-day PC's; I guess not unlike how the modern mod community did - there was a patch for the PC version to make it work on modern PC's, iirc.

Well no, there was the fan created 1.02 patch (made by Qhimm (the person, not the forums themselves)) which fixed some bugs, including the Chocobo races which were nigh on unplayable in the original version. There was also a patch known as "Animevamps 1.04 patch" which was the 1.02 patch with a trojan attached to it. The guy literally stole the real patch code and messed around with it to absolutely no effect. This whole thing was actually hilarious, because Eidos "released" the 1.02 patch that Qhimm created by shitting out the link to it on the VII PC page and gave him absolutely no credit while passing it off as if they created it.

Various manual modifications used to be required to get the game to run on modern PC's, but a patch that does this has never been made. Since 2010 everyone's been using Aali's graphics driver, which is pretty much the only thing guaranteed to get the thing running and allows people to set proper options such as resolution. Before that there was a patch called SaINt's high resolution patch which made it even harder to get the game running.

There was of course the "Ultima Edition" which was a torrent that basically worked right out of the box. But it came with AnimeVamp's patch and was scarily broken in places.

The summary of what I've said is already in there ^_^. With regard to the details, I think Shad might be writing a PC vs PSX comparison article, but I could always create an in-depth page for the PC version itself if no one's doing that.

I've also included the bit about Aali's driver in the new VII summary article (EDIT: meant "page", not article), but that's not going public until the new site goes live, along with the rest of the Compilation Franchise Guide pages.

I wonder if they'll bother putting in the original uncompressed pre-rendered scenes.

I think on one of the documentaries for ACC, you could see bits and pieces of really good quality CG scenes from FFVII, so I guess they still have the high quality originals.

We can only hope :monster:

The quality of the FMV's in the original PC version were actually reduced from the Playstation version though, so I guess we'll see what happens with that. Hopefully they do have a miracle drive somewhere with higher resolution back-ups.

If you're into the Final Fantasy franchise, you'll want to tune into our gamescom coverage in a couple of weeks. Square Enix is bringing a whole bunch of new stuff to show off at the August 15-19 event, set to go down in Cologne, Germany next month.
They have a big on-stage, first-time gameplay reveal planned for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn -- first eyes-on people. Game Producer/Director Naoki Yoshida will be at the show for a signing session, too. The downloadable PC version of Final Fantasy VII will also be shown off. Finally, Final Fantasy Dimensions will show its retro face at the Square Enix booth.

Should I make a news post about this or is someone already on it? I could do it now or tomorrow night when I get home.

It's probably not worth bothering at this point since I'll be home soon enough anyway.
