Kirk and Spock performing superhumanoid feats of acrobatics. Really.
I know, it's a little early to judge a game that isn't due for release until 2013, but I'll give it a shot!
I disliked the new movie because it was shallow and produced solely to attract new fans and their wallets, with shiny special effects and "badass" stunts. It wasn't the worst Star Trek film ever made [lol Star Trek V] but I actually couldn't contain my laughter when I saw it at the cinema, and I felt like walking out around the time Sulu started wielding a katana on the Romulan drilling platform. Or was it when Scotty transported himself and Kirk onto a ship travelling at warp? I forget.
Anyway, I don't think I'll appreciate a game that seems to be an attempt to turn Star Trek into Die Hard. Heaven forfend that someone should make a new ship-to-ship/fleet-to-fleet combat game in the Star Trek universe, but that's just not how it works any more--generic action games with co-op play appeal to the biggest audience and, like Hollywood, all that seems to matter now is making lots of money.
Even if I accept that Kirk and Spock are to become superheroes, I am still presented with a game that will apparently play like Mass Effect and Halo mixed together: a familiar looking shoot 'em up with throwaway soft-RPG elements and an emphasis on co-op play. This is still unappealing. I mean, Mass Effect might have been a simple shooter with soft RPG elements, but it had non-linear progression to keep it interesting; I sincerely doubt that a Star Trek game designed to bridge the gap between two movies is going to be anything but linear.
I hope a judgement formed this early will prove to be invalid.
