Star Trek Into Darkness... and beyond

I really wish they would stop destroying the Enterprise every damn movie. The ship has never been impressive once in these new films. It's like it's made of tissue paper. If you wanted the crew to be stranded, why not just separate them from the ship, or have an enemy steal it - make it seem like something that's actually worth having.

I'm sure the impeccable casting will continue to carry it like they did in the other ones, but geez.

So... It's like an action film starring the cast of Star Trek, right? Because nothing about that really looks at all like a "Star Trek" film at all to me. It's all just quips and stunts (which, given the director is wholly unsurprising), but still.

I am pretty proud about fortuitously naming the thread though. :awesomonster:

Not a traditional Star Trek look (as I'm told by all the "nerd rage" articles I'm seeing on the interwebs :P), and nothing particularly visually interesting, but for some reason, I still see potential. I will refrain from further judgement until further trailers are shown at least :P.

I don't think it propels me to nerd rage (I never considered this new film series anything beyond pretty good anyway -- never great), but this definitely doesn't strike me as anything special either. And it feels so off I don't feel inclined to bother.

The trailer might have been ok if it wasn't for the absolutely horrid choice of music. The movie itself looks distressingly bland to me.

Apparently Simon Pegg was no fan of the trailer either.

While people were widely divided on how they felt about the trailer, one of the movie's main stars admitted that he wasn't a fan of what the marketing team had come up with.

Talking to Hey U Guys on the red carpet for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in London,England, Simon Pegg said that the trailer only showed one side of the movie in favor of appealing to a specific type of audience.

"I found it to be like the marketing team was saying, 'Everyone come and see this film. It's full of action and fun' when there's a lot more to it than that," Pegg said. "I didn't love it because I know there's a lot more to the film."

"There's a lot more character, a lot more story and lot more, what I could call, Star Trek stuff."

Pegg ended the interview by acknowledging that he realized the marketing team had to ensure they could bring in as many ticket buyers as possible, but told Star Trek fans to "hang in there, [and] be patient." Fans can also rest easy knowing that Lin and Pegg ignored everything that happened in the previous Star Trek installment, Into Darkness, and are essentially kickstarting the series again with Beyond.

Pegg will be reprising his role as Scotty, but he was also one of the lead writers on the film, too. Star Trek Beyond hits theaters July 22, 2016.

So that's a little cause for hope, I suppose.

That actually does fill me with a fair bit more confidence.

Looks neat, :monster:

But also a bit er, episodic? But I guess that's to be expected with a movie series that isn't a 3-part epic.

That trailer was CONSIDERABLY better than the first. I'm still annoyed that the Enterprise is gonna get it's ass handed to it AGAIN. But it at least sounds like there might be some Star Trek in there.

what's that NX-01 lookin thing?

So, uh...what happened with this movie? Did anyone see it? Is it any good? After that first trailer that everyone hated it's like it completely dropped off the face of the planet. There was that little blip when Takei disapproved of making Sulu gay...but that was it.
I barely even heard any excitement when it released. Why didn't it release during the week of the 50th Anniversary anyway?

And after Into Darkness you had the huge fan backlash. I heard like one or two reasonably positive things about Beyond and then silence. What gives?

The villain was a bit weak but yeah character dynamics and such were pretty well done imo. I also quite liked that new character (Jayla? JLaw? somethingsomething) and wouldn't mind seeing her return in another movie :monster:
Also, the plot was simple fun and lacked some of the dumb shit from previous films (which I still enjoyed but all those beam across planets and magical healing blood shenanigans make no sense and break quite a few things and should never have been used :monster: )

That space station looked fucking cool. :monster:

I saw the movie but I didn't think of this thread and instead wrote a little review thing in 'last movie you watched' about it. :monster:

Star Trek Beyond: I really enjoyed it. :monster:
Favorite moments: the Enterprise getting utterly destroyed in the first quarter of the movie, the (in my mind) awesome design of the alien ships and how they operated that destroyed Enterprise, the character Jaylah, the gigantic orb Yorktown that housed cities and docking bays and whatnot and looked awesome, Spock (as usual :awesome:) and him and Uhura still being together at the end of the show, and the moment when Enterprise used music to destroy the alien fleet. FUCKING MUSIC. At first I was like "Oh my god come on, how corny!" and then seconds later I was like "But it's so awesome" :wacky:

Pretty spot on. Honestly First Contact is my favorite Star Trek film, or at least its by far the most re-watchable for me.

It's definitely a great movie, easily the best TNG film, although probably the only TNG film worth watching at all. I'd rate it higher than the Abrams films but only because of Picard getting his revenge and resolving a major part of his arc. Otherwise it's a well directed and produced action film that needlessly sacrifices cohesive science fiction and consistency with the TV show (again, fairly on par with the Abrams films).
