Final Fantasy VIII was number one? That's a bit surprising. But those three games being the top three is no surprise at all.
It's only a little surprising. For a while prior to the Compilation, it was pretty widely considered that VIII was more popular than VII in Japan, while VII had both more of the West's and the overall world's attention.
By early 2006, though, FFVII was the golden boy again, slotting second only to FFX in a Famitsu poll asking gamers in Japan what the best 100 games ever are:

I also agree with Alex's assessment that recent outings from the Compilation, as well as SE's overall decline in quality (FFXIII, FFIV, every time Kitase opens his mouth to speak of a FFVII remake, etc.), have done a little bit to diminish demand for a remake of VII as compared to giving another FF some attention.
Not enough to make the statement true that they no longer want it, no. Not by any stretch of the imagination have they stopped wanting it. Just not as fervently.

But really...look how many games in that list...that truly was Square's Golden Era wasn't it? The 2D FFs and Chrono Trigger certainly had their moments, but look how may classics were crammed in that that generation, lol.
Yep. =) It was a great time to be getting into Square games, I can tell you that.
Really, who the hell would take a ff8 remake over a ff7 remake? Is this fur reals?
If they can get Kitase to stop sharing his ideas with everybody, and remember to play through the original game a couple times while they make the new one, I'd take it over VII.
