For FF's 35th anniversary, RPG Site conducted a massive poll to decide which game is the best, among other topics. Here are the results. I highly recommend reading the whole article, lots of interesting data points. They even perform a few cross analyzes. For example, VI was a late bloomer. Only 21.69% of people who said it was their favorite also noted it as their first, yet it's still a top FF.
