Thief

Square Enix announces Thief, an interesting looking reboot of the Thief franchise (of which I only played II on PC when I was younger and died a lot). Developed by Eidos Montreal and it's for PC and Next-Gen systems.

I'm going to remain very cautiously optimistic about this one.

Thief is very much a game from a different generation of gaming. It didn't signpost you or handhold you and if you wanted to play it well, it was entirely up to your own personal skill to ensure you succeeded. There wasn't much handholding. That's kind of game design isn't really encouraged in the market right now.

That said, Eidos has been doing really strongly since Square took over, with Deus Ex being the only title that's really disappointed me so for. I really hope they can do the original Thief justice.

Looks pretty good. I tried to play the original Thief, but couldn't get into it. I know its shallow as hell of me to say this, but the graphics killed it for me. It was in that odd middle ground where it wasn't advanced enough to satisfy my need for visuals, and not bad enough to feel classic or nostalgic.

But the game itself played really well, so I'm excited to see what this reboot will be like.

I have a friend who's actually a little wary of the things they've been saying about the sequel. He was a big fan of the hiding-in-the-shadows, non-confrontational approach that the Thief games were known for, but apparently this new one may be a lot more combat-oriented.

BUMPING THIS BECAUSE THIEF IS SO GREAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW LONG I'VE BEEN WAITING

replaying all the games in anticipation now

there's been a few interviews where the devs said they replayed the originals and made an effort to stay true to the spirit of the game

namely that you are indeed, a thief, and not some crazy tank that happens to pick up random junk

praying that this doesn't change during development

I think I played Thief II on PC back in the day and enjoyed it, but gave up and never played it again for some reason. Either that or I'm confusing it with another PC game called Thief.

I'm thinking I should give them a shot, they look like interesting games. The new one does too.
