Okay there was a snafu, I jacked up the date. We're gonna call this even money and go into a tiebreaker between Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy Tactics.

i played fft up until chapter 4 after which the difficulty seemed to jump up too high for me to get through even random battles

That was the problem I had. I will have to resort to some sort of beginner's guide to help me out. Maybe if it wins I can include a good one in the literature at the main post.

I need to look though my PS1 collection... I think I bought Tactics long, LONG ago and never actually played it. I wonder if I still have it or if it ended up in a garage sale?

The difficulty curve can be uneven, probably Tactics' biggest flaw. But the spikes tend to happen at specific points that I could warn you about. The first spike is, infamously, at Dorter, 5 story battles in

Also, Chapter IV is the last chapter in the game! You were so close, hito!

this is what disappointed me because i was looking forward to finally finishing it and then i can't even beat a random battle with a bomb

do the enemy levels scale with the player? i remember having to grind for the boss at the end of the previous chapter, and then suddenly random enemies are killing me

The random encounters do, yes. (Based specifically on Ramza's level)

i think that's what got me, because ramza's level raised during the previous boss battle and it threw off the balance and other characters weren't up to that

So a good strat would be to keep Ramza really underleveled while maxing everyone else out? Hmm...
