Trailer dialogue analysis

I've just put up an article breaking down the remake trailer's dialogue one line at a time. I've given my own opinions, but I may have made mistakes or overlooked something, so I'd appreciate your feedback. It would be especially great if someone who understands Japanese could look at the subtitles and compare them to the English voiceover. Thanks.

Flintlock, you write a mean article. That was awesome.

My take on this isn't just from the Fans' or Devs' perspective, but also from the perspective of the story itself.

While this is a Reunion... it may take the story in different directions and perspectives... meaning we could see more than what we saw in the original game.

By that I mean, extra content that refers to the rest of the compilation.

Reminds me of the, "Hell, it's about time!" line used in StarCraft II's announcement but a lot more intricate. Fantastic job with the article.

Also, I agree with Blade's point. It looks like this is going to cover the existence of Edge at least, so I'm thinking we'd be looking at a remake plus some.

I feel we might be getting something like a framing device for the story, taking place after AC and DC (Edge definitely looks bigger than before) and then looking back to the story of the original.

Framing Device + Original FF7 Story + New Finale to wrap up the dangling Genesis plot thread?

I wouldn't call it "footage" quite yet, since it's CGI rather than "in game models".

But it's up there in terms of quality. And it is "new".

I like this framing device thing. That's a great way to wrap up the compilation and let this be the real end people have been hoping for. I can actually see this thing ending with the gang huddled around the Cosmo fire, telling the story to Marlene and Denzel.

Great article. I am looking forward to seeing thelifestream.net's community get hold of, and pull apart every single piece of information released on this remake up until the day we get our grubby little hands on it. It will be like the count down to Advent Children all over again!

Based on something Shademp said in the Remake Confirmed thread, it looks like that the city at the beginning might not be Edge but just Midgar?

Saw that, and I'm a rather intrigued by it. I'm wondering if the visual breakdown will have any more details once they get through that article. The voiceover at least talks about it from a past-tense perspective which kinda leads to the sense that there were two different points in time shown, but it's entirely possible that that's not the case.

I thought the same thing regarding the voiceover.

Thinking about it, it could be.

Actually yeah, it does seem to be just Midgar. The highrise buildings all look kind of different and somehow more 'modern' than what we have seen from Midgar so I just assumed it would be Edge - but then again we never got that good of a look at the upper plates and especially not at daytime!
And the subway is something that was never established in the OG (we only knew of the train connecting the plates with the slums) so I also assumed this was something built for Edge.

But that one scene with the kids at the playground - it looked like the slums at first but it's actually still the upper plate and the same style of buildings can be seen in the background.

So I do think it's all just Midgar after all!

God, after all this time, to get a detailed look at the upper plate infrastructure...so cool.

It's definitely Midgar - I recognized this as the remake trailer (the first time I was watching it) from the shot of the playground with that goofy slide.

To be fair, I think we do see part of Edge at the beginning and then it goes into Midgar. Train station sign showing "South Edge" with a subway layout and the park the kids were playing in seems very reminiscent of AC.

That's my interpretation anyways.

But where Barret and Cloud are walking? Come on. Definitely Midgar.

I think it's that the tense of events in the voiceover combined with the "South Edge" trainstop shown at the start triggered a response that the first two opening parts of the trailer shown were taking place in a time where Edge already existed, i.e. post-FFVII, before it does the flashback to the more gritty filtered parts that were clearly during FFVII.

I don't think anyone was debating that we were seeing footage of Midgar, unless I'm confused.

Yep. I thought the beginning was post FF7 and it jumped back to FF7 time. I thought this transition occurred when it showed the kids at the playground. But now, after Shademp's post in the other thread, I think it was just transitioning from showing above the plate to the slums. Apparently, there is a North Edge Station shown at the beginning of FF7. So the "Edge" aspect isn't unique to compilation stuff.
