I love this pairing.
It wasn't my original FFVII OTP. In fact, I really shipped Reno/Rufus (maybe I or someone else should also make a thread for that). I couldn't really see Rufus and Tseng as a couple because my head canon saw Tseng as more of an big brother figure to Rufus, a guardian who was a mentor to Rufus. Someone Rufus looked up to and wanted to please (aside from his stint as AVALANCHE, where he'd convinced himself none of the Turks could be trusted or spared if that's what it took).
I don't really like Older/Younger pairings. While I do ship Akuroku, it's an exception to my rule and I ship it because they're clearly friends - on an equal footing. I really don't like the power plays, teacher/student dynamics you get with a lot of ships.
Then I read Death is Part of the Process, and I fell in love with this ship, at least the way Licorice wrote them.
Why I love this ship:
It's pretty.
Tseng's protectiveness of Rufus
The way the dynamic of their relationship has to shift as Rufus goes from the heir Tseng is sworn to protect to the King he is sworn to follow, from Rufus following Tseng to Tseng following Rufus
I like the way it mirrors Aerith/Tseng's relationships
Their personalities
