What are your favorite and least favorite Final Fantasy games?

The title is self explanatory. List your favorite and least favorite in order. You can asses them based on story, or other criteria.

Favorites based on storyline: 6,8,4,7,9,10,1 (With the exception of 1 and 6 the rest are very tough to score and can be moved around depending on mood. 6 is the best, but 4,7,8,9 and 10 are all very good in my book.)

Least Favorite: 5, 2 (caveat, I played them but did not beat them)

Runner Up Silver Medalist Have-A-Tattoo Favourite Forever: FF7

Rounding out my top 5 are FF6, FFT, and FF12, ranked in order of whichever one I’m playing at the moment.

At this point, there are more Final Fantasies that suck than rule imo, so I don’t have any standout stinkers. FFX and FFXIII were disappointing in, like, a novel way? So they’re on my radar in a way that newer entries simply aren’t. I don’t really play new FFs anymore, the series is clearly not for me.

I think past FF10 things have taken a nosedive since Square became Square-Enix.

I really need to give FF9 another shot in its entirety. I played it when it first came out, but never finished it (remember I got to the place where the song “terra” is played) and remember very little about the details of the story.

I fired up my old ps1 over a year ago and began playing it, but my disc 2 wouldn’t read, so I stopped. But I will say I was loving the game up to that point! Moreso than I did when I was younger. 20 years later, I noticed and appreciated so many more things about it. In particular, Steiners personality was cracking me up, and Garnet attempting to talk like the common folk was great too.

Gosh, I'm so bad at ranking, because I like (and dislike) them for different reasons.

Most favourite?

FF9 because it was my first FF, with the best soundtrack and the best fairytale atmosphere.
FF7 because it translates far too well into the present day and has the most iconic protagonist.
Crisis Core because of another charming protagonist, cool gameplay mechanics, and gags.
FF15 because I love the characters deeply and enjoy exploring the world with them.
FF6, even though I haven't played it myself, for its adorable sprites, unexpected plot twists and satisfying sense of humour.

Least?

Honestly, I just haven't played them all to pick. I don't think I'll play 1-5 in the near future because they were very simple back in the day, and the characters didn't have much personality. It's like New Frame Plus said in his recent video on the animation of FF2, "It's a real shame that the game's not fun." And I constantly forget 10 and 10-2 exist, but I should probably play them too someday just for the sake of experience.

I'm a bit anxious about continuing 12 because of all the historical and political weight the story has, but I loved the setting, so I think someday I will.

And I'm aware of 13's linearity, but the trilogy is in my bucket list anyway.

And yeah, never been a fan of MMOs.

Top Favorites:
(1) Final Fantasy VII and it's Compilation titles, stories and soundtracks.
(2) Final Fantasy VIII for it's story and how it ended perfectly(I'm a sucker for happy endings)
(3) Final Fantasy IX, similar reason for the first two.
(4) Final Fantasy X and X-2.
(5) Final Fantasy XIV and all of the Expansion and how the Hydaelyn and Zodiak Saga ended(though I have to admit it felt a bit rushed).
(6) Final Fantasy XII, the story was okay but I really enjoyed it's music, especially the final battle track.
(7) Lightning Returns-Final Fantasy XII...That's the only one out of the trilogy I really like for how it ended and for it's music.
(8) Final Fantasy XV for it's music and story(even though the ending was sad).

Top Least favorites:
(1) Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2.
(2) Final Fantasy V.
(3) Final Fantasy XI.
(4) Final Fantasy II.(Okay, I don't mind it, but I have a friend who hates Chocobos through out the rest the series, especially in Final Fantasy X).
(5) Final Fantasy I...Maybe it just needed a bit more story, but it's the very first game and made in the late or mid 80's.
(6) Final Fantasy IV and it's sequels. I kinda like Golbez in the Dissidia titles, but that's pretty much it.
(7) Final Fantasy III.
(6) Final Fantasy VI. Needed a bit more work on Terra, and Kefka is on my Worst hated Villian list. Maybe second to Hojo who's the top most hated video game bad guy of the franchise. Still would like to see a full 3D remake similar to VII and not like the IV remake DS game.

FF7: Masterpiece. The remake is impressive and all, but it's no replacement, at least so far.

FF8: A bit torn here, because I regard FF8 as having so much potential but not fulfilling it....unlike 7, it actually needs a remake. Great atmosphere, some cool character concepts and music. Writing spirals into silliness on disc 2 though, and the orphanage twist is justifiably infamous. Disc One of the game is why I rank it here I think.

FF9: Very consistent, much more so than FF8. Good, solid game, but lacking the Nojima spark of cool character-driven material.

FF10: Hurt by goofy voice acting, but a more interesting character and story concept than FF9. Unfortunately spirals into silliness yet again as the game goes on due to soap opera villain Seymour and such.

FF6: Like FF9, a good, consistent game, but no Nojima, which means it doesn't have that more personal feel. A bit too cartoonish early on at times, but unlike other FF games in that it actually seems better as it goes on.

FF4: Very basic, but neat concept I suppose.

FF12: Utterly dull/bland.

Wasn't there a tier list thread that was essentially this very question? :monster:

...Actually there wasn't, that was just Mikey's thread on their playthrough of FFIX. God, I miss them.

Anyways, I'll just share what I said back then since it's still applicable.

my definitive FF tier list.png

The definitive FF tier list.

S-tier is honestly, close to broken. No bad match-ups. Represents the truly best the FF series has to offer. The most important thing in this series is "character." Character, character, and character. If you're in S-rank, that means not only do you have a solid combo game that you can pick up and enjoy, but your character building, style, soundtrack and art style match-ups. Addendum, I'd probably put XIV Shadowbringers/Endwalker in S tier now.

A-tier is basically everything that's good but isn't uber broken. Which is honestly a lot, considering most franchises. These have mostly great match-ups for everything but the S-tier which kinda sucks but a skilled audience can really get around the S-tier character's unique character cross-ups and actually pull a win with their own strong mix-ups and mostly safe combos. FFX and FFXIV are sorta anti-meta in that sense given they actually go hard against S-tier in the hands of a really skilled and dedicated player. This is no longer true, XIV is meta 100%, be prepared. The strong and sudden win Emet-Selch pulled off last year at NHK put FFXIV in the meta and I don't see XIV going anywhere but up. Same for X. People shit on X-2 but they don't know what they're talking about or just hate lesbian fighters.

B-tier is good, but if you're in this tier, that means you have a significant number of really unsafe moves in your game that can destroy you in a match-up or just keep you from being A-tier. Games here go for a lot of stylistic DPs that are awesome when they connect, but when they don't, you basically end up in a corner grinding for obnoxious amounts of time, having poor fundamentals in gameplay, thin-story moments, thin-characters, or something else. Strong supers are great and all, but if you have no grasp of fundamentals, you're gonna have to rely on Burst-cancelling and hoping you can make the player forget they nearly got wrecked by an A-tier's cross-up.

C-tier members are good, but they're worse than B-tier. Except, even their DPs are weak. However, what keeps them from being in D-tier is they do one thing good. Like really good. They have one good just-combo that just works and if you're feeling like showing off your skill and have OD'd these games, you could actually pull off a win against a B-tier, or a non-focused/noob A-tier player. I don't think I've ever seen someone from C-tier hang with an S-tier match up though. But who knows.

D-tier is just. Why were you made?

E-tier is where you go if you want to be robbed. Games here actively hurt you. They look good but they're a n00b trap. They exist to take your money and run. Best to just watch these from afar. You're also here if you're dead because you got phased out. Sucks but that happens.

Hope this helps people understand how to play this franchise. XVI is looking promising, and I really can't wait to see its combos. Really looks like it'll at least be A-tier but given who's designing them? Easily could be another S and then we'd have to redo all this.

Addendum. Stranger of Paradise is high B-tier. Almost A tier, tbh. Dark horse anti-meta that plays wildly outside the confines of what you'd expect from a FF. Comes off as mid but is extremely viable with hard to telegraph mix ups and very few bad match ups. Only issues are it's model and hit boxes. Can be hard to see clearly and its weird graphics, textures and movements can make its cooldowns feel safe when in reality it's not. Definitely not the usual expected game but if you give it a chance you'll be solidly impressed. Fucking loved it. Highest of the B tier, by far.

Eh?
Favourites:

FF7:
Solid game with great characters, interesting story and world.

FF6:
Love this game and think it has the potential to be the best one if it were to be given a ground up remake and fleshed out. I think it is just as good as FF7. Also, people tend to focus on FF7's industry impact but ignore FF6's which has its important impacts on the industry too. Such as being one of the earliest games to have serious or complex themes and one of the earliest games to have a female MC.

FF9:
A charming game and I'm looking forward to the remake. While its the classic videogame/fairy tale story, its done extremely well.

As a parent of kids who are 9 and 12, I find there is a lacking of "full concept" story driven games, that have serious themes, that are aimed at their age group. FF9 is one of the few I can hand to them without bending my normal content appropriateness rules. I think its a shame that story driven games overlook that market so much.

FF10:
If it weren't for Tidus this would be an excellent game. I still love it despite him though.

The Bad:

FF8:
I feel like it was rushed out which leads its story and gameplay to be substandard. I liked it when it was released but if I'm being honest, its because it had pretty graphics and a good soundtrack.

FF12:
I dont like the battle system, I wished either Ashe of Basch were the MC's and something about the world felt stale. It was the first FF that I DNF'd.

FF13:
Okay... I dont know what I think here but I lean towards meh. I finally tried it and I need the world and cities to explore in my RPG's. It felt like an action game which isnt what I want from an FF game. I also didnt like the battle system.

At 12 and 13... just... give me an action RPG like Tails or newer Ys games, or be an ATB/turn based like FF6-10. Not these in the middle, MMO style battle systems which manage to lack the qualities of both action and turnbased systems.

1. FF9 - First final fantasy and playstation game I ever played. The sole reason why I asked my mom for a psone as a Christmas/bday gift. I still remember playing it for three hours, and not knowing about the save feature. Couldn't play it again until I bought a memory card haha.

2. FF6 - Didn't get to play this until I bought the SNES classic. Terra and Celes are two of my favorite characters in the whole franchise

3. FF12 - Bought it when it first came out. Was only 22 years old and not into politics. After playing it again a couple years ago, my opinion drastically changed.

4. FF15 - Criticisms aside, this actually has my favorite lore/story. The ending is my favorite in all of videogames.

5. This one is tough. As a whole game, I'd put FF7OG. If Remake continues on the path it is on, I'd definitely put the series ahead of the OG. That's not really fair though

My all time favorite is always going to be FF6 because its various elements (storyline setting, plot execution, gameplay, controls, graphics, sound, and unifying theme) all just seem to have the best **balance** of any series mainline entry. It’s not perfect, sure. It has two giant plot holes:

1) What happened to Terra after Gestahl took her away to Vector? Not even bothered with, treated like it doesn’t matter.

2) WTF is Kefka doing after the 2nd half of the game begins except the one time he zaps Tzen? Just playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2? He drops out of the Story entirely after he gets an immense power boost. What?!?

…That being said, it’s still my absolute favorite entry forever. 7 and 4 closely follow it, in that order.

Now then, my least favorite entry.

I have not really ever played 13 or 15, and have no opinion of 11 or 14 other than that I think making them mainline entries was a mistake.

FF2 is IMPOSSIBLE to defend.

Everything about it is either cheap, clumsy, irritating, or just plain crap. Its attempts at plot and characterization fall flat as a Flan on fire. Its gameplay and controls are infuriating at every turn. Its visuals are nowhere near any kind of step up from FF1 (itself only passable for being a slight upgrade from Dragon Quest’s Lego Brick environments), and its music gets annoying quickly, although I will give it credit for having the first real Boss Theme of the mainline series. It does not, in fact, actually play until LONG after I usually get fed up with the game, but it is a banger, and I’ll give credit where credit is due.
