Wii U

So yeah.. seems like simply a different version of the wii. A lil gimmick that seems cool at first but then no one likes actually playing something with it.

Touche :monster: Except nintendo seemed to have the gimmick of the wii as its only sales pitch aside from its decades old ips.

Yeah they pretty much focused on just the controller.

I would've liked to hear some technical specs. We know it's at least on the level of Xbox360 and PS3 but can it do more?
It needs to be future-proof when the competition releases their next-gen consoles after all.

Also, what about online? Online on the Wii sucked, has it improved?
Will there be an achievement system?

Seriously, there are still more questions left open than answered.
The only question answered is "What's the new gimmick of this console?"

Heard a lot of rumored specs on the internet. Not going to believe any of it.

Also I honestly couldn't care less about an achievement system, :monster:

Though its early, I probably won't buy it. I haven't even bought the Wii. I just play it at my friend's house :P. I think they're trying to aim for the hardcore gamers with this Wii U thing (at least that's what I heard from probably unsubstantiated rumours), which I guess is a plus. The screen on the control thing is an interesting idea. It would make it the most customisable control in existence. In that respect, I think its good. But its HUGE. I prefer the controls that fit to your hand.

I presume a lot of games will still use the old Wii controller. But stuff like Angry Birds (you know they're going to make a Wii U version; they've made one for practically everything else) will most likely benefit from the new controller. And Angry Birds is pretty simple (although there is really no way for it to be played with a standard controller; it needs a touch screen, unless I guess you want to change the way shots are input), so it's pretty easy to imagine how more complex games could benefit from the new controller as well.

The Wii U is the stupidest name for a console since, well

Wii U sounds like you're making siren sound effects.

Sounds like investors were also unimpressed:
Nintendo's share price has hit its lowest value in five years following the unveiling of the Wii U device.

That's according to Bloomberg, which noted a 7.5 per cent drop in the price to ¥16,610 (around £125). More than 1.67 million shares changed hands yesterday, compared to the daily average of 724,000.

"There were high expectations from the new version of the Wii and this fell far short," said analyst Yusuke Tsunoda.

"People had expected to see something more at a big event like the E3, but there wasn't really anything more than what's already reported."

Sounds like the Wii U is continuing the proud tradition started by its predecessor.

I think this is the biggest problem. The idea of a touch screen/dual screen is a neat and unique idea. But to sit and play a game holding something like that while simulataneously pressing buttons/touching the screen seems like a pain in the ass. And it would get very old, very quickly.

The screen was about 6.2" I think, which makes the controller about the same size as the small Kindle (or any e-reader). I can't imagine holding my Kindle sideways while trying to play with it for an hour.

And someone brought up an interesting point in the other thread about dropping the controller. What if you drop it? How resilient is the screen? How much would this controller cost? I assume a lot people would want at least 2 controllers, but I bet the system would only come with one.

I mean, I'm 26 so I really don't break my controllers/portable gaming systems/discs etc. But little kids probably aren't as careful or as spacially aware as I am.

Wii U sounds like you're making siren sound effects.

Yes. Yes it does.

SO...

The demo reel of the current games, was from PC/PS3/360. There's a video here with Reggie talking about it.
This morning, Nintendo showed off a highlight reel of third-party games supposedly running on its new Wii U console. They looked great. Turns out that footage wasn't running on anything of the sort.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has told GameTrailers that the footage—of games like Ghost Recon and Darksiders II—was instead culled from the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the games.

AND...

Aliens: Colonial Marines isn't actually confirmed for Wii U.
"We are extremely thrilled about the potential of the Nintendo Wii U and are honored to be a part of the earliest efforts for research and development on the platform with the Aliens: Colonial Marines project that is so perfectly matched with the platform's unique and exciting new capabilities," said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. "As more details about the Nintendo Wii U emerge, Gearbox Software is equipped and motivated to engage and support the platform and its customers."

PLUS...

Oh, and it looks like it's the same story for Super Smash Brothers on Wii U & 3DS
According to Smash Bros. designer Masahiro Sakurai, "Honestly, at this point, we shouldn't be announcing these games to the general public, but since we need to assemble developers for the games, we made them public."

Sakurai added that work on the games has not started, and their future is dependent on the ability of those recruited to work on the titles.

I'm surprised at how many sites still feel as though Nintendo had the best to offer from E3 in their conference...

Really? Cause my list of wants looks like an awful lot of PS3/Sony stuff.

Can't say any of the console manufacturers blew me away. I'm real sick of their focus on motion control bullshit.

Now, Uncharted, Skyrim, and Mass Effect on the other hand...

Motion control and 3D stuff doesn't really impress me. I'm just as happy without it.

I'm surprised that the screen isn't being used as a view finder in this game, because it seems that's what everyone wants to do with it at first.

Also - currently, the system is limited to one of these types of controllers per system.

A couple of things have crossed my mind

-the concept of this type of controller seems really neat

-it's still kind of big (and thick for that matter). think of being a kid, and holding that, AND having to use all the buttons

-now think of being a kid who has to swing it down to drop the arrows off. I see there's a wrist strap, but I still see this ending up on the floor XD

I'm not completely closed off to it yet, but I'm a little wary.

I'm really just getting this vibe that they announced this Wii U asap because they really didn't have anything to announce besides more 3DS garbage and everything they've already announced before.

Because lets face it, anything that was worth getting from Nintendo was already announced in the past year, and it doesnt look like they've made much progress on those.
