Worst _______ of the compilation.

After seeing the worst final boss thread, dragged up some old memories, I felt that I needed to make a general rant-y sort of thread. So to start things off, despite absolutely loving the game, Crisis Core totally earns the Worst Enemy & Worst Materia in my book. Here's a little rant on why:

It all begins with Crisis Core's Grand Horn. FUCK. THIS. GUY.

It's Totally Immune to All Physical & Magic Damage, which means that you can ONLY kill it with the following:

a) Limit Breaks - which are random.

b) Summons - more rare than limit breaks.

c) Gil Toss Materia - stupid materia that hardly anyone invests in.

d) Costly Punch - single-handedly the most mechanically broken, visually stupid, and overall worst-designed materia in the history of the entire FFVII Compilation... that Crisis Core eventually requires you to spam the ever-living-shit-out-of in order to beat higher-level monsters... typically beginning with with encountering the Grand Horns.

I get sad everytime people say that since the comp brought me to FFVII :(

Maybe the worst part to me? Genesis. Am sorry. I think he's too important to the compilation for being someone totally absent from the OG.

And I agree, Costly Punch is so broken.

The worst part to me is the lack of planning behind the idea to expand FFVII into multiple mediums. Advent Children was a movie that just kept growing and growing and the team introduced characters like Barret and Vincent without really knowing what to do with them yet. Crisis Core, and Zack being the playable character, was not even conceived during the development of Dirge of Cerberus.

There should have been an overarching plot plan before all this started, saying "If this title succeeds we'll go in this and that direction and if we manage to go ALL THE WAY we will end up with THIS title to finish it off with."

So yes. The worst part to me is not broken game mechanics or clusterfucks in canon. The worst part is that Square had no idea where they were going with this.

Worst part of the compilation: all of it.

Did I do it right? :monster:

The totality does not count as a "part", ergo why I judge that you did not do it right.

Have to agree with Shademp about the random structure of the Compilation. It's like each title was treated as though conceived in a bubble with no relation to the original game or one another. Likely why we have so many plot inconsistencies (Before Crisis, I'm glaring at you right now) and why the atmosphere (in Crisis Core especially) often feels wrong.

I'll never forget Mog ranting about how Crisis Core's slums feel like a nice place to go for a stroll when those of the original game were thick with danger and the discontent of those who lived there. And he's right. Before Crisis actually did a better job with the slums, which is more than a little embarrassing if you ask me.

While I liked Dirge better than most, I don't think a lot of thought was given to the notion of just how many disasters the people on this planet are expected to deal with in a short amount of time. Junon was attacked in BC, again in CC, and then again prior to Dirge, with 1,200 people taken captive apparently. Midgar was attacked in CC, had Zirconiade hanging over it in BC's final events, went through a lot more shit before being destroyed at the end of FFVII, then Edge was attacked in Advent Children, and then Deepground attacks again in Dirge.

Dirge doesn't even give us a proper sense of the effects of the attacks suffered during its timeframe, and no reaction from the populace -- which at this point must be thinking, "Get that space program up and running again so I can ship off this hellhole."

And don't even get me started on how wrong the scale and logic is for a city the size of Midgar to be buried deep beneath the upper city ("Hey, it's a secret city under a city under another city"), populated with thousands of superhuman soldiers who have literally never seen the light of day, not even to deal with Sephiroth.

There's also the obvious signs of a lack of communication between development teams when the Shin-Ra building was broken in half during AC, yet remains perfectly intact in Dirge, a year later.

Advent Children isn't without its problems either. The original FFVII was colorful and its environments rich, even in the slums of Midgar. AC looks like it borrowed its color palette from the "Underworld" films. That worked out great in a "Matrix"-inspired movie about vampires fighting werewolves. Less so in a sequel to FFVII.

Basically, while some components have emerged more than others at times, the atmosphere of the original has not been recaptured by any of the subsequent titles. Which is a shame, because that atmosphere defined the game and is what we as fans were always so fond of.

^I agree with all of that. And it's not just limited to the compilation. It seems to be their pattern with every game set in the same universe. X-2, XIII-2, and almost certainly Lightning Returns. All far too different from their prequels.

It really is like they're afraid of being accused of not changing enough, or something.

It's the "our fans didn't like _____ aspect of the game, so we'll go in the opposite direction" effect. When all they really needed to do was change it a tad.

That's not from the compilation. That's in FF7's Ultimania.

Technically FF7 IS in the Compilation I guess, but the tone of the thread struck me as 'where the new compilation failed where ff7 didn't' Although even that doesn't seem in keeping with what X was trying to go for. He wanted worst specific-something.

Here's one people should enjoy bitching about - Worst Voice Actor (any language):

Worst Voice Actor - English - Excluding DoC Genesis, as that clearly is not his actual voice, just a product of SE's aforementioned lack of planning. Angeal. Just like every other bad voice actor, I think people make it out to be worse than it is, but yes is can be pretty flat a lot of the time. If Cait Sith had a lot of lines, he might get this, but given that he doesn't talk much, I appreciate the Scottish mythology nod.

Worst Voice Actor - Japanese - Tifa. Ayumi Ito is pretty hot, iirc, but still, giving our favorite Action Girl such a high and screechy voice. Ugh. That noise she makes when she's dragging Loz on the floor of the church...she's lucky all the stained-glass windows didn't break.

If I remember right, Inspire was from the Early Material Files section of the Ultimania. It may or may not have been intended to be part of the final product prior to the Compilation (I'm leaning toward not).

I think you're too harsh on two or three tracks there, AGD, especially Hold on Dear Brother and How She Boogalooed It.
I guess they've got to be released, so no Battle Hymn of the Republic...

Did that bot really just come up with that? Not copying it from another post? If so this is my favorite bot ever. Can we keep him?

It confused me too. I read a couple of pages to figure out what it was referring to. Is it subliminal advertising or something?

More like an infiltrant; they get some poasts to raise their not-a-bot rating and in our case get over the you can't poast links until X poasts, or alternatively, poast a bunch for a period, then edit their older posts and add links and shit to it.

I never checked anything else except OG and AC, so that should be as far as I can go with the compilation....
But it isn't. I think the whole compilation probably sucks; extra focus on CC and DoC. From what I've seen and heard, I really don't need to take a closer look. Or let's say my time can be used better. AC is nearly tolerable, but so many things make so little sense or are just plain stupid, that I prefer to think of that as a fanmade tribute to the OG.

EDIT: oops, I actually forgot to complain about something specific...
Worst thing about compilation: Geostigma

Yes,how can anyone forget Genesis I feel his character was very horribly written and very grating.I think his redemption at the end of CC wasn't earned at all and the narrative near the end also tried to make him sympathetic but it just falls flat on its face. Its just seems poorely done and executed.

I agree with all your points except this one. I personally think they went with the darker color palette to better capture Cloud's emotional turmoil. I think that having a colorful world just wouldn't fit into the story they were trying to tell. However, I'm usually a fan of darker tones, so it's all a matter of preference.

Unlucky

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN
I blame Genesis for most of the fuck-ups in Crisis Core. We have the Wutai war and AVALANCHE, and then there's Zack's life in Shinra, his struggle against them after escaping the tube and his budding romance life-changing friendship with Cloud to explore upon. But what did we get? Dumbapples, LOVELESS and his army of copies which took a great part of the game instead. Lamest, shittiest 'crisis' evarr.
