Xenoblade Chronicles: A Comeback to the genre

My friend over at RMN can put it a lot better than I can, so I'm going to quote his post from over there. I'm really surprised nobody here has really mentioned it; Xenoblade is bringing JRPG's back. It's really that good.

The Quick Gist
Xenoblade Chronicles is a Wii Exclusive JRPG by Monolith Soft released in 2010 and in Europe last year (more on this later). It takes place in an incredibly huge and gorgeous world that feels like an offline MMO that you can freely explore but without the bullshit padding they bring. Fast travel lets you get to where you want to be with the fuss, quests end immediately upon completion and there are a lot of quests, all in a world where the locations are on the bodies of giant frozen fighting robots gods. It's full of content too, I've heard there's about four hundred side quests and there's still 30-40 hours of content in the main story if you skip every single side quest. It's visually stunning, the music is fantastic, battles look engaging and exciting, and a lot of heart and soul was poured into this game. I'm excited for it.

Is It Good?
I'll say it outright: I have not played this game. I can't give personal experiences about it. If you want to hear what people are saying from the horses mouth I can't provide it but I can say that 99% of the opinions out there answer the above question with Yes. Everything I heard about the game has been positive even from some of the JRPG skeptics I follow. I'd totally suggest doing some of your own research to see what people are saying to get a better feel of what players thought of this game. If you're interested I'd highly suggest preordering it because...

What's With the Pre-Order Deal?
Remember Terranigma for the SNES? Similar deal here. Nintendo of Europe decided to localize and publish the game for Europe while Nintendo of America decided to personally inspect their own colon. In the last month or so Gamestop and NoA have banded together to release the game NA-side. It's basically a NTSC version of the EU release as far as I know. However due to continued incompetence Xenoblade is only getting a limited release and it sounds like stores are only going to get as many as were preordered. If you want a copy it's highly recommended you preorder it before the release date of April 6. (You can still buy it normally afterwards)

Where Can I Preorder?
If you live in the US you can snag it from Nintendo's Online Store or Gamestop. Canadians are stuck with EBGames. Total cost is the midrange of $50 US/CDN for the whole shebang.

I'm Not Convinced, I Require Videos!

A trailer of in-game footage. Mostly running around, no gameplay, just showing how beautiful the game is.

English gameplay trailer with a variety of content from scenery to battles and a side quest!

More of the above including a premonition gameplay mechanic and visible equipment! Actual visible equipment like armor and not just tiny shields or weapons and reflected in both gameplay and cutscenes.

Some extra fighting.

I have a Wii and haven't enjoyed a JRPG in years. I guess I should pick this up. Too bad the release date is already past though :(

That's good news. I'll look for it this weekend, maybe.

I get to feel smug here, I rented it and I enjoyed what I played so far, but then real life shit ruined things before I got sucked in. I'm going to get it again when I save up a bit of cash though. I was impressed that the voice acting didn't suck, plus it wasn't all american accents for once - not that theres anything wrong with that, its just a refreshing change.

For being an RPG playing bunch, I'm really surprised more of you guys aren't talking about this. I need to make another topic to educate you fools on what games you're missing.

I want to get this someday. :monster:

I recently got this. :monster:

And I'm enjoying it too. The sidequests are numerous and very MMO-like (collect stuff, kill monsters) but fortunately it seems a lot of them will resolve themselves by just playing through the game and exploring the maps.

There's so much scenery porn too. And so much exploration to do. And the music is very good, too.

And just like The Last Story, it's full of Brits. :wacky:

Apparently the prices for this game in the US are through the roof, or so I heard.
I got it here for 31€. :P

Is it true that Gamestop still has this in stock? It's listed at the official site for the game. I think the price listed was $50.

If it is I may be persuaded to spend this $50 check I just got as a belated birthday present on it. But I might just save it for the Moonsorrow box.

I have it, and I got put off the game after about 4 hours to go and play The Last Story instead.

I think it's a great game that does the best it can with the limitations of the Wii, but design-wise I think it has fairly poor conveyance. Directions and locations to which quest objectives are supposed to be are very opaque, and while I find it all an intriguing world there were a lot of empty, flat spaces with little purpose to them.

All this may be a fault on my part, but I personally don't respond to things very well where there's little feedback, especially in a sandbox game like Xenoblade. I've seen HD-resolution emulation on Dolphin, though, and on that the game looks incredibly faaaabulous.

Got this game on day one, and I still haven't finished it. Got over 90 hours spent on it. I enjoy this game, however it is without a doubt the most grind heavy game I have ever played. I am still slowly going through this game and do intend to see the end.

One thing, if you can you should play this game with the classic controller instead of the Wiimote.

Yeah there was a big deal on reddit regarding Xenoblade and gamestops stock. They have a ton in warehouse and in multiple copies per store but apparently they sell out quick :reptar:

edit:

Also at gamestop this game is 89$ used.

I'm clocking in at 64 hours and I'm still not done with the story. :wacky:

I did get sidetracked every now and then by sidequests and lots of exploration of course.

Prison Island is about the halfway point or so I heard. Reached it at about 40 hours.
You must have been doing sidequests excessively. :monster:

Sidequest, and grinding affinity for heart to hearts. Affinity is a really shitty mechanic.

I don't even bother too much with it. I just switch party members regularly to let it evolve naturally. It'll carry over to a New Game+ anyway.

Walked around the jungle for 2 hours looking for "Soft Sea Cucumbers". Need 4 of them. Only got 3. When I came through this place the first time I got a ton of them (which I used for affinity with the fur ball thing in your party), now can't find them for shit. Frustrating to say the least.
