Hot dogs aren't all that big a deal here, either. I mean, I can see why they changed it from bread, seeing that bread is both
1. An even lesser deal than hot dogs. That, and to most English speaking people, it doesn't have the implicit rarity that the game portrayed; I mean, it's fucking bread. It's one of the most common commodities there is. There's a reason for the term 'bread and butter'.
2. Not...that great? I mean, don't get me wrong, bread is a wonderful food item that's necessary for all kinds of edibles. Hell, I even enjoyed eating bread by itself as a kid. But the idea of bread being so good that a college aged student kicks himself for missing plain ass bread in the cafeteria, and almost chokes to death eating bread after bread, is hilarious. Besides for the occasional hot dog contest, you're not really going to see Americans gorging themselves with tons of hot dogs, either.
I'm assuming that in the original Japanese it probably wasn't plain ass bread, and actually maybe a roll or special flavor bread or something? Instead, they should have done that, make it a special, non common (but delicious to imagine) roll? Dinner rolls are good. Rolls with honey butter are good. Cinnamon rolls are pretty rad. Something like that. Hell, you could even get fictional with it and make up some sort of (fictional delicious spice+bread roll) or something.
But yeah.
