I believe the key to what makes the game great is the age of the player. FF7 is by far my most cherished game. I come back to it every year for a month or two to play it. I was roughly 9 or 10 when I got my copy of the game and it opened up a world of JRPGs to me. I have a friend who is roughly 5 years younger than me and FF10 had the same impact on him that 7 did for me. As I’ve gotten older the story’s plot holes have become more noticeable, but when (almost 20 year old SPOILER) Aeris died I felt it more emotionally as an adult than I did as a child. Squaresoft created something amazing that withstood the test of time. Then proceeded to follow it up with FF8 which contains an actual time paradox that was written as a plot point (a little off topic I know). So, why do we keep coming back to this game? I’m not even sure of my own answer. Maybe, just maybe, it’s because we are simply all waiting for a black materia Reunion of our own.

All the time spent in the swamp. Mastering Final Attack to spawn a new one. Do it again. Do it again. Do it again and again and again and again. Master and spawn a new Knights. DO THAT again. Do it AGAIN! Do it again and again until you finally have a materia combination to beat Emmy and Ruby with zero effort. (Thank you death_unites_us) Granted, I could’ve made it a bit on the intermediate difficulty by just using one Knights and a bunch of mimes, but it was that time in the swamp and beating all the Magic Pots and Movers. I don’t know why, but the swamp and the Gelnika (farming sources) were my two favorite places and my favorite times.

…..oh wait, I lied. The snowboarding game. The snowboarding game at the Gold Saucer is actually how I was introduced to FF7. My buddy had a PSX and had it on the snowboarding game at all hours of the day and night and would leave it on pause when we would go to school (when we actually went…..we’re from the wrong side of the tracks as they say). We would challenge eachother to get faster and faster times. We would do balloon challenges. We would see how long it took to finish a race while constantly holding stop/slow. Oh that cutsey wootsey snowboarding game.
