Careful. Your monitor’s warranty does not cover acts of Aki.

Here it is, folks. The commentary we’ve known we had to do since we recorded the first one.
Yes, it’s The Spirits Within. Brace yourselves.

This movie is credited as single handedly ruining Square and leading to Square Enix. But is it as bad as the press it’s gotten? Honestly, No. It’s actually an enjoyable, very pretty film, and it would probably be seen as such if not for two simple things.

Final.

And Fantasy.

These two words are what takes a perfectly good Science Fiction action flick, and turn it into a film perhaps unjustly hated now, a month shy of one decade after its release.
Because apart from that, this movie's pretty good. Certainly it's a lot better than most of the schlock you get on the Scifi channel (Their name change is another ill advised branding decision, IMO), and it's still one of the best looking photorealistic CG films in the world at large. Plus, it has Steve Buscemi playing himself.

Also, awesome wrist mounted computers I’d actually love to have today.

So Click this link or the picture at the top of the page to listen to or download the commentary, and enjoy. Make sure you listen again on July 13th, the 10th anniversary of the film.

Also starring Sir Outfit not appearing in this picture.

Did I mention Steve Buscemi playing the comic relief?

If Steve Buscemi’s not enough reason to watch this movie, then there’s just no reaching you.

I loved this film when I saw it, which was before I read about the Final Fantasy games. It’s too bad it’s In Name Only (apart from some undeniably similar themes to Final Fantasy VII), as it keeps people from appreciating it.

I’ve never actually seen the film, I was going to watch it but someone told me that it wasn’t good so I was unsure, until I completely forgot about it. But now that I’ve read this I’m gonna watch it in it’s anniversary

This movie helped me decide my life’s ambitions. I was blown away by the CG of the film and having watched it several times over I still have no idea what it is about simply because I have no interest in paying attention to anything but the CG. If for that alone I applaud them for having made it because without this I’d still want to be a veterinarian…

The only thing this amazing movie has in common with Final Fantasy (FF) is saving the world theme. Other than that, it would’ve been so much more welcoming naming it “The Spirits Within”. The story is obviously “too deep” for the majority of FF crowd to appreciate. The computer graphics (CG) for today’s CG movies match this movie’s, and this movie was made 20 years ago! It’s way ahead of its time. What a breath-taking experience watching this movie has been.
