The Most Memorable Moments of the Compilation of FFVII – Part 1

by November 21, 2009 0 comments

Vincent tells of his relationship to Lucrecia and how she was Sephiroth’s mother

“The scene in FF7 in which Vincent tells us about Lucrecia for the first time is memorable because while previously we had learned that Sephiroth was the result of expiriment, it tells us of the truth of that expiriment, and explains how Jenova, despite being found frozen and buried, could ‘give birth’ to Sephiroth. It lets us know, very simply, very quickly, about Vincent, his past, his motivations, and sets us up to learn of more of Hojo’s atrocities later on in the narrative.”

The DC ending scene with Vincent and Lucrecia

“The ending of Dirge of Cerberus, with Vincent talking to Lucrecia, still asleep inside her crystal, is memorable because it marks a change in Vincent’s story and Lucrecia’s role in it. In this scene, his view of her changes from a symbol of his sin, of something to feel bad about, to someone to be thankful of, or a positive memory, since she rescued him again. It also marks a change since vincent both literally and symbolically steps out of his cave, ready to move on and forgive himself, having finally learned the lesson he helped Cloud Strife realize the year before. Along with the conversation with Shelke and the final pan to the sky, this scene tells us that Vincent Valentine is no longer lingering in the past, that while he will remember it, he will not be tied down by it, and, to reiterate a well worn cliche, the final pan to the sky shows us that the sky is in fact, the limit.”

The Kalm Flashback battle where Cloud and Sephiroth fought a green dragon

“The battle against the green dragon is memorable precisely because there is so little of it. For most people, this fight will not last two whole turns, and the ‘Cloud’ of the flashback does almost no damage to the dragon, if he even gets an attack in before the dragon KOs him or Sephy strikes down the dragon, typically some of the strongest enemies in RPGS, including FF7 the first time the party returns to Nibelheim later in the story.

This event lets us know just how powerful Sephiroth was, and, along with his later striking of the Midgar Zolom and the player’s fighting of those same dragons in Nibelheim later on, how much more powerful than the party he still is, even as they become more impressive throughout the game.”

Cid and the others finally launch into space and save the Huge Materia from the rocket.

“The launching of Cid’s rocket is a memorable sequence, from beginning to end, and there are lots of reasons to talk of why it is and should be memorable. Firstly, it is the culmination of the Cid’s story, of finally getting to go into space when he had been prevented from doing so many years earlier to save Shera’s life due to her slowness. It is memorable because this sequence also takes that full circle, with Shera’s suspicion being proven correct with the exploding oxygen tank, with her saving Cid’s life to balance his saving hers, and it is especially memorable for the view of Gaia from space, and Cid’s speech about his realizing about how small and defenseless their planet is now that he can see it from space, and his reaffirmation to save it no matter what, and using science to do it. It is a turning point in the tale, for Cid, for AVALANCHE, and as a whole.”

Barret watches Dyne commit suicide in the Corel Prison

“Dyne’s suicide is a memorable event, partly because of its thematic nature of flinging himself off a cliff when he had previously been thought dead after falling from one, but mostly because of its nature of a scene of dualities. Marlenes, Biological and Adoptive father, A man with a gun arm on his left hand, and a man with a gun arm on his right. And capping it off, both men believe their hands are too stained for them to be allowed to hold the daughter they love, with one man finishing himself off, and the other feeling he must fight on. It is a scene of two men, almost exactly alike, except in one very important accord. It is a scene about how it is what we choose to do that truly distinguishes us from others.”

Snowboarding in the Gaea Cliffs

“To be honest, I’ve no clue where to begin with about how this minigame is memorable in a way that doesn’t apply to all of them, so I’ll simply talk about all of them. The majority of minigames in FF7 are memorable because unlike previous installments, they were added to the story, serving to move the plot along, instead of being a distraction from it like the minigames in previous FFs. The motorcycle race to the edge of Midgar, the Chocobo Race to win the party’s freedom, and yes, the snowboarding down to Gaea’s cliffs, all of these events push the story along instead of being purely sidetracks for bonus items, like the sliding puzzle and memory games of previous installments. The Snowboarding game is a fun minigame, and better alone than several other games exclusively about snowboarding, and was considered worth making its own game, but it’s memorable not just because it’s fun, but because it was a fun diversion from the plot that nevertheless helped further it.”

Glad to see that Zack’s death and Cloud inheriting the Buster Sword made it to number one; that was the one I would have voted for.

No doubt Zack and Aerith’s deaths were going to make it as #1 and #2. Question is…who will win in the end? Zack or Aerith?

And, once again, I have to give a hand to Squall_of_SeeD for his heartwarming flashback of an analysis in the Cloud vs. Sephiroth in Nibelhiem bit.

    Awesome! Thanks for this! =)
I totally understand why “Zack’s death and Cloud inheriting the Buster Sword” is moment number one. It’s very emotional and a sad yet beautiful scene =)

All of these moments were memorable in their own way and quite well-written. As for me, I’m known as the kind of person who NEVER cries during movies or anything but Zack’s death still made me emotional. T.T

I still do think that the ending to the original Final Fantasy VII really stuck with me.

I voted for the DMW one because it was the first time I ever cried playing a game. Nothing was that powerfull. And LicoriceAllsorts’s text capted that so well, it brought tears to my eyes again. You did a great job.

As for number 1# and 2#, it was no surprise actually. I was surprised to see Aerith’s death was not in 1# though. I suppose Crisis Core did move with the player’s feeling. I glad though, because Aerith’s death made laugh. (i know, i’m horrible)

    Wow… Just, wow…
I have played through FFVII at least 100 times, I know Advent Children off by heart, I’ve watched Last Order a million times, veiwed the scenes from Dirge of Cerberus over an over again, and I’ve maxed out my Crisis Core file to lvl. 99… But those desrciptions of the moments took what I have come to love and be so familiar with, and filled them with a new meaning, beyond which I haven’t felt since I first played the game…

    Bravo, guys… Bravo…

    Great article!
Especially love the description of the reactor scene (#6) 🙂

Could be because of my missing sleep, but I don’t quite get the line
He had been something special all along — and the only one who knew it was the man who hated him for it.
Who are you talking about there?
