English localization of Type-0 done, but shelved

by November 17, 2012 0 comments

In this week’s roundup: English localization of Type-0 shelved; FFXIV taken offline; Tactics developer retires; plus lots from our forum.

English localization almost done, but… (via Operation Suzaku)

According to our source, who recorded voice-over for one of the characters in the game, at least 90% of the English localization is complete. The dubbing sessions took place in the last quarter of 2011, just after the release (October 27th) of Final Fantasy Type-0 in Japan. The entirety of the English dub recording is said to be complete.

But things went wrong near the beginning of 2012. PSP software and hardware sales had not been doing very well in the US – namely SE’s own PSP titles which had failed to perform at retail earlier in 2011. Square Enix reacted to this by essentially shelving Type-0 for good.

Final Fantasy XIV Ends with Cinematic bangs and server whimpers (via Kotaku)

Here’s the end of Final Fantasy XIV, Square-Enix’s MMO getting a reboot in the form of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Fittingly for a flawed endeavor — one Square-Enix officially apologized for — the last day didn’t go so well for some users.

A glut of traffic is to be expected whenever you’re bringing down an MMO — who doesn’t want to party like it’s the end of the world? — bringing problems with it. The finale was plagued by disconnections, login difficulties and error screens. There were so many wanting to log on and fight in these promised epic battles that Square Enix had to start turning players away based on subscription end date.

Matsuno retires from Level-5 (via Gamesindustry)

Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story designer Yasumi Matsuno has publicly announced his departure from Professor Layton developer Level-5.

“I’m sorry to report, but due to personal reasons, next month I’ll be retiring from Level-5,” he said in a tweet. “Having finished production of 3DSWare domestically and in North America and Europe, it’s at a good point time-wise for me to retire.”

Damn, I was looking forward to playing this game. You’d think video game companies would learn to stop doing this after what happened with FFII and Mother 1.

Why shelve it? Why not enhance it for a console? OR release it as limited DLC for Lightning Returns.
