BEHOLD THIS GLARING ERROR AND DESPAIR FOR WE ARE FIVE BILLION LIGHT YEARS AWAY FROM THE ILLUMINATING TRANSCENDENCE OF GOD

Yes, it is true! I did not want to believe it at first, but it is in fact thusly:

This row of text where Sephiroth says "To Nibelheim" uses the hiragana へ instead of the correct katakana ヘ.

...Okay, I'll explain myself.

With Japanese symbols, you have to watch out for how their appearance changes with the font you use. Symbols can vastly change their appearance between given fonts, and symbols that are normally clearly different from each other may end up identical.

Hiragana symbols are typically squiggly, having more round strokes. Katakana symbols have more angular, sharp turns in their strokes...broadly speaking.

In a font that reveals the difference more clearly, see in the image below the hiragana to the left and the katakana to the right:

How do I know then that Sephiroth's line "ニブルへイムだ" is written with the wrong symbol? Because I know the hex value that is used!

Following what seems to be a convention, the JP symbol table of Crisis Core begins by listing the hiragana, followed by the katakana.

80 00 23 00 = の
80 00 24 00 = は
80 00 25 00 = ひ
80 00 26 00 = ふ
80 00 27 00 = へ
80 00 28 00 = ほ
80 00 29 00 = ま
80 00 2A 00 = み
80 00 2B 00 = む
...and so on.

80 00 73 00 = ノ
80 00 74 00 = ハ
80 00 75 00 = ヒ
80 00 76 00 = フ
80 00 77 00 = ヘ
80 00 78 00 = ホ
80 00 79 00 = マ
80 00 7A 00 = ミ
80 00 7B 00 = ム
...and so on.

By checking the hex values used by Crisis Core, I can confirm that in the screenshot example above, the value 80 00 27 00 is used and not 80 00 77 00.

I can also confirm that this is the only example in the game where the hiragana へ is mistakenly used. All other references to Nibelheim use the katakana symbol, as they should.

Fair enough then. We have proven on a technical level that the wrong symbol is used for this instance in the game. But what if we change to the correct symbol? How different does it actually look?

Let's observe this with crops from screenshots that were taken at 1440x816 resolution: Three times greater than the default resolution.

Hiragana (in-game default):

Katakana:

So... When changed to the katakana symbol, we see a two-pixel sharper turn made at the "mountain peak" of the symbol so-to-speak...once we've increased the resolution to three times greater than normal.

Ergo I'll concede to the conclusion that was obvious from the start: They did technically make a mistake here with the symbol, but Crisis Core's angular, low-resolution text makes the hiragana へ and katakana ヘ practically identical anyway.

And I only just now realized that we are staring at Sephiroth's chest oh my word how embarrassing
