We don't appear to have a thread for this phenomenally good show that I've just started watching.

On episode 5 and loving it (the original series). I'm 100% sure there are a few fans of this on here. All of the related shows appear to be on netflix with both Japanese and English audio which is just full of win.

Discuss!

Both series are really great, they each have their own pluses and negatives. Like, I personally enjoy the first half of FMA 2003 more than than first half of Brotherhood, while for the second half I prefer Brotherhood over FMA 2003 (not to say either are bad). And while I may prefer Brotherhood overall plot-wise (or more honestly/specifically the manga since there is stuff Brotherhood omitted from the manga), I definitely like FMA 2003's art direction and soundtrack more (and also executing sad/horrifying moments better IMO). And I really love the Conqueror of Shamballa's bittersweet ending.

I don't have much to say except that I love FMA! When I was in Japan a few years ago they were issuing postage stamps with Ed and Al and other FMA characters, so I bought two sets, one for each of my boys. I love the anime but I think I like the manga more. I love her artwork.

Time for a re-watch, maybe. If only I didn't have to work....

Oh man I hate the ending to that movie. There are few things that annoy me more than when a movie has a sad or bittersweet ending when there was such an obvious way to avoid it. I don't need everything to have a happy ending, but it's just as bad when it was obvious the writers just wouldn't allow something to have one.
(SPOILER) First of all, why do they even have to destroy the gate at both sides? If they destroy the gate on Emestris' (sp?) side, would the gate on Earth's side go anywhere?
Secondly, I still don't see why they had to go through to destroy the other gate. Just alchemically rig up one of those airships to explode once it goes through?

The "dilemma" is as hollow as the one at the beginning of Star Trek Voyager and so easily avoided, it bugs me. FFX is an example of a sad/bittersweet ending done right, in my opinion. The Conqueror of Shambala is not. FMA 2003's original ending was better.

Also the dub for FMA is fantastic.

FMA was my main fandom for a few years.

I'm a fan of FMA 2003/Shamballa over the manga/Brotherhood, if only because the former is a lot more character-driven while the latter is more plot-driven (which ends up feeling artificial to me if it's not well-done). Also Brotherhood's art style made me sad, especially the character models.

I really adore well-written sibling narratives.

I prefer the original Anime of FMA to brotherhood and I think that's only because that's what I watched first. I grew really attached to it and so watching the same things (just modified) didn't have the same impact on me as they did in the original. I know that brotherhood includes more from the Manga and had I seen it first? Yeah I would have preferred it. It's not like the original was BAD at all (in which case I would have def preferred brotherhood) it just cut out a lot. Besides I didn't like how brotherhood kinda rushed through a few things whereas the original paid more detail to some of the things I liked. They're both good though, both have good pluses, both do things differently so it's like ... worth it to watch both versions tbh.

also Al is the best bye

FMA is fantastic, I've been meaning to get around to rewatching Brotherhood.

This series is also responsible for the greatest fictional character ever created

Jus sayin'

Never saw the anime, but I did read the manga. It's definetly one of the better fantasy/political stories out there. And Armstrong is awesome.

I'm enjoying watching the Anime. The dub seems to be really good, but for shits and giggles I've been watching the dub with the "proper" English subtitles (the English subtitles that would be there if I were listening to Japanese audio, not closed captions) and it's really interesting to see how different the dub is compared to the original.

I don't know if any of you will remember this/ know what I'm talking about, but in episode 6 (2003) "The Alchemy Exam", the English dub made it sound like it had been decided from the beginning of the episode that Ed would be the only one taking the exam, but the Japanese - English subtitles referred to "we" and "us" (both brothers) taking the exam for the entire episode until they decided that just Ed would do so toward the end. The English dub glossed over it entirely, I found it a bit strange.

I personally really love it, I didn't think that the dilemma was hollow at all, but eh different people like different things. At least you can admit the soundtrack for the film was great, right?
As for the why
(SPOILER) they needed to destroy it on both sides probably has to do with Ed wanting to just be safe (like what if it was possible to recreate one half of the gate with the other? Or what if the power of the gate could still be abused even if one half was only left. And they can't alchemically rig a ship to explode on the other side because alchemy only works on the Ametris side (save for the activation of the Gate itself). Also their was a time crunch going on in the middle of the battle, Ed was thinking on his feet.

And I agree the dubs are fantastic for both series.

Seems like it's understandable to post this here. Apparently the live action adaptation is pretty decent: https://kotaku.com/the-live-action-f...y-p-1820608826
