As the title implies, you can't link directly from Photobucket now unless you pay for the premium service. Since this negates the purpose of Photobucket for most folk, it might be worth harvesting your account (if you have one) and storing your images elsewhere. I've noticed a few linked images with the ominous message of doom already on here. There is a way to bypass it for now but the method escapes me, I suspect it's C&Ping one of the other linking methods instead of the default.

I haven't gone and downloaded any of my ancient stuff from the olden days, but I tossed my old sig image over on https://vgy.me/ since you don't need an account for it. Not sure where else'd be a good option for more account-related stuffs, but there're some articles out there on it when I looked earlier today.

I always recommend Picpar for images you're happy for everyone to see. You don't need to sign up; in fact you can't sign up. Imgur is a decent option if you need an account so you can keep track of everything you've uploaded, but I've heard their image compression algorithm isn't great. If you actually care about what you're uploading I'd suggest paying for your hosting. I use NearlyFreeSpeech because it's dirt cheap – it's pay-as-you-go, and costs me about 15 dollar-cents a month for about 200 MB of uploaded files – and because they impose basically no restrictions on what you upload. (Not that I have anything dodgy, but if I did, it'd be fine.)

This is the hard reality of "free" image hosts though, imgur et all will have to come up with a scheme to make money off of hotlinked images at one point. Youtube's got that better, they can already serve ads in embedded videos. Nothing's stopping an image host from doing the same, but since it's images they can't be clicked on, so not much value in those.

An option would be to set up your own domain / hosting I guess. But that takes a bit of monies and tech skills. Or a good host that will simply set it up for you.

edit: lol I think I completely misread the second half of your post and thought you were suggesting one day Imgur may want to become a domain host when the ad impressions dry up lol.

Going off the host/domain idea for them. I could see them trying to do like a blog set up pretty easily. Ideally have it so that the upside is that you have quicker/easy access to your own image albums/galleries when making a post as they already are on imgur if you were an existing user.

Then toss in an easy way to reblog or add in images you find while browsing Imgur or shit you see on Reddit that is hosted on imgur and it could be pretty legit while offering an easier way for them to introduce potentially clickable ads onto a page.

I personally use Puush or Mixtape.moe for image, GIFs, music and Webm files. Recently I am also trying to get used to Imgur, although personally not much of a fan of it.
