Default I think I know why Yuffie/Vincent is such a popular pairing

I think it might be a case of pair the spares. As most of you probably know, Yuffie/Vincent has always been a popular pairing amongst FFVII fanfic writers and fan artists, even back when the only FFVII game we had was the original FFVII itself, where the two characters had very little interaction. I myself am indifferent to the pairing, but have often wondered what makes the pairing so popular. I always figured it was due to the fact that they were both secret characters, but today I realized there's more to it than that. In fact, for one thing, I think the fact that they had little interaction at first was also a reason, as it meant fanfic writers were given a lot of leeway with how they could make the relationship develop. But I think the main reason is due to how popular it is amongst shippers to pair the spares. For those who don't know, pair the spares is a common trope in works of fiction (including and especially fan fiction), where characters who are alone amongst a bunch of couples are paired together so they aren't left out. An example of this would be the Waluigi/Rosalina pairing in the Mario fandom, who get paired together as they're the only plumber and princess, respectively, without a love interest, since Mario and Peach have each other, Luigi and Daisy have each other(who are themselves a canon case of pair the spares), and Wario has Mona from the WarioWare series, whereas Rosalina has yet to have any romantic interest in any Mario game, and Waluigi has an unrequited crush on Princess Daisy. Both are also extremely popular characters in the Maro series, and if one wanted to ship one of them with someone without having to break up a canon couple, pairing them with each other is pretty much your only option without having to resort to using a more obscure Mario character or interspecies romance, not to mention they've had very little interaction between each other in the Mario games, so like with Yuffie/Vincent, one is given much leeway in developing a relationship between them. If one applies this same logic to the 6 surviving human playable characters in FFVII, they can understand why so many people ship the pairing, as Yuffie is the only one without a love interest of any sort, yet is a very popular character. Cloud and Tifa have each other, and Cid has Shiera, and Barret did have a wife and Vincent had Lucrecia, but Barret's wife is dead and Lucrecia left Vincent for Hojo and is now in a cave and unlikely to leave it any time soon, so that leaves Yuffie, Barret and Vincent alone. However, if you're wondering why people usually pair her with Vincent instead of Barret, there are several likely reasons why. For one thing, Barret is over twice Yuffie's age, and about twice her size, while Vincent is physically only 11 years older than her(though chronologically a lot more than that). For another, Yuffie and Vincent are simply far more popular characters than Barret, and therefore more likely to appear in fan works. A third reason is that many fan works already pair Barret up with Elmyra, due to pair the spares logic for starters, as well as due to being older than much of the main cast (though they're not necessarily close in age; Elmyra's likely around a decade older than Barret, give or take a few years), and the fact that they're both doting parents to children that aren't even their own biologically.
So tl;dr: the Yuffie/Vincent pairing is likely popular due to pair the spares logic alongside several secondary reasonings.

P.S.: Keep in mind that this whole post is mostly just speculation on my part.

From what I've seen people liked them for their interactions as characters in DoC but even before that it was the fact that they had such contrasting personalities that people really liked to see them together. It was one of those "cute hyper-active girl" changes the "brooding depressive guy with the dark past" and teaches him 2 love again things.

I used to drink a lot of Yuffentine myself until Shelke came along. Shelkentine became the new addiction.

I don't even know if it's actually pairing them together that's the draw, it's just that they're fun to read and write together in the same room, and in that case, why not just write them as a pairing? If that makes sense?

But yeah, I guess it's some of that. Cloud is outta the picture as a good contrastive personality, since he has Tifa ... or Aerith ... or Sephiroth ... depending on your tastes.

Why do people feel the need to pair characters when they write them together anyway? Platonic and romantic portrayals of the same two characters give opportunities to explore different things, especially if the pairing isn't canon. Pairing characters simply for the sake of pairing them seems a bit shallow to make a compelling story.

This is not a pairing I've ever found remotely believable. I can believe Yuffie might have a schoolgirl crush on Vincent, because he's handsome and unhappy (like Kurt Cobain or some similar brooding rock star), but 5 minutes in any kind of real relationship with him would have been more than enough for her.

You kinda answered your own question there. Because pairings allow writers to explore certain character dynamics that they wouldn't be able to explore in genfic.

Also porn.

EDIT: Also, I don't think Vincent/Yuffie is any more unbelievable than Squall/Rinoa (which is canon). Either way, the writer's gonna have to do a lotta work convincing me that either of those two will work out.

Agreed Squall/Rinoa wasn't a great fit (then again I think Cloud/Arieth only worked because Cloud was acting like her ex BF the whole time they knew each other) but I would say Vincent/Yuffie would be the bigger stretch of the two. Vincent was already in love and still can't get over it, he love was an older women (I think) and despite only being 11 years older than Yuffie physically Vincent still carries himself like someone that is his actual age.

The age difference is what gets me. It's not as much as an issue in the later installments, but in the original game Vincent is an immortal 60+ (really 30) year old and Yuffie is literally underage.

A 27 year old with a 16 year old is gross. SORRY BRO.

Yeah somethin like that.
I always imagined Yuffie must be really annoying to Vincent, not any kind of attraction.
Unless Yuffie had a crush, which wouldn't last very long, but then would be extremely annoying to Vinnie.

That's where I see the fun in putting them "in the same room" (and have)

That's just my perception, having not played DoC (can't survive 2 minutes in a shooter game, for real)

Not in Japan, I believe. But I've always had trouble with this'n, the depictions I've seen generally go something like this.

Yuffie: Hey Vinnie. Wanna date?

Vincent: No.

(repeat 500 times until...)

Yuffie: Hey Vinnie. Wanna date?

Vincent: God damn you're annoying...which... I now somehow find endearing. Crap. Alright, fine, so long as you leave me alone the rest of the time.

Squall/Rinoa makes more sense if you have her in your party a lot, which I didn't, so I just got annoyed about having to rescue her from some kind of danger for like the sixth time. Doesn't help that the entire rest of the party ships them.

It's all in the depiction and portrayal? I mean, Squall and Rinoa's relationship can be summed up in a similar manner. (Rinoa basically just kept at it until Squall broke down.)

You can actually keep Rinoa in your party all the time and still get almost nothing out of it in terms of Squall/Rinoa development unless you make the right choices. There's actually a sequence of answers/actions you have to pick throughout the game to make Squall's sudden break make more sense, but it's extremely hard to just stumble upon it if you're playing through it as a casual gamer.

Yeah but I meant to the exclusion of exploring a platonic portrayal of the two characters. Heck, even best friends only ever seem to be shown as madly in love with each other. It's like people can't care deeply for each other in a non-romantic way, which I guess isn't an issue limited to fanfics.
