The Man
Default Adult females oust teenage males as largest gaming demographic

PBS article.

Who wants to bet this doesn't have the slightest bit of impact on the way the industry runs things, though?

Hey, I am apart of that demographic.

So, game developers listen to what we ladies have to say or suffer the consequences.

I think I might feel slightly insulted if you're right Hito, which the article says you are. In my mind games are either casual games or, well, real games, the difference being that casual games (such as the ones these ladies are embracing) require very little emotional investment. You put a lot of time into it, and yeah, you get some fun from it. But it's pretty shallow and straight forward. It takes a whole other level of commitment and enthusiasm to be what I would classify as a real gamer. Mostly, I don't even put myself in that camp.

TL, DR: Most of these women aren't gamers, they're techno mommies.

Moreover, women committed themselves to a particular game and stuck with it. Globally, women came back to the games that they had chosen to play 42 percent more often over a seven-day period. If they are 42% more likely to not buy another game a for much longer time then I think that kind of negates them as the biggest demographic.

My fucking mum plays candy crush shitsaga, my aunt spends £££ on hayday or some shit. This is all a big pile of wank.

My only problem with The Industry (DUN DUN DUN!) is that shitty boring games keep getting made, and if that article is accurate, then we can look forward to even more shitty games.

I'm not going to have the time or money to play anything for a good long while, but I think by the time I start playing games again there will probably only be about 4 things I think are worth playing. I'm hungry and in a pissy mood.

I think there's two forces at work here. Who plays games the most often, and who spends the most money on games. While who plays games the most is important, it's the people who spend the most money on games that will influence what type of games are being made.

'Gamer' isn't a title that can be awarded like a knighthood. If someone says they are, then they are.

Also, OP, someone presumably commissioned this study, so they'll probably pay attention to the results.

The problem with this whole survey thing is the whole nebulous "gamers!" aspect of it. Companies commission these sorts of studies and surveys whenever they want to determine that there's a market for their specific product, and whether or not they're male or female only makes up a small part of it.

It's like a study that says, "30% of movie-goers are females in their mid-thirties*". The industry isn't going to look at that one statistic, throw up their hands and go "well fuck, time for some inclusivity in our product I guess." Companies will go through the entire study for proper context before they find some compelling reason to make their next game genre-nonspecific.

Re: "games" and "gamers", for me anyone who plays a game is a gamer to some extent. My aunt who plays Fruit Ninja on her iPad is a gamer. My nephew in Hong Kong who plays nothing but CounterStrike is a gamer. One of them probably needs to go outside a little more, one of them probably has shit taste in hardware, but they're both gamers.

*Probably likely definitely not a real statistic

Yeah if we count those atrocious Facebook things then you may as well count Crosswords, Sudokus and everything that can be defined as a game (they're electronic these days, right?) on the planet.

I don't even think it has to be electronic per se to be a "gamer" in the most general sense of the word. Different strokes for different folks, different games make for different gamers. Lumping people into some arbitrary, exclusive group is kind of pointless.

Note that the ESA very specifically uses the terms "video games" and "computer games", so in that context basically any form of electronic interactive entertainment might be a "game", and hence its participants "gamers".

▲I don't think there's anything wrong with these games, or anyone who plays them (I play them myself). My personal definition for what makes a tried and true gamer just developed differently.

I like knowing what someone else's definition is and why, since it is so subjective. It's not like there's a Official Gaming Panel (that would consist of largely Asians) to whom one goes, and based on your history they judge if you're a gamer or not. We each can decide for ourself.
