Default I need something to open Zips and Rars

Last zip/rar opener I downloaded installed a bunch of spy ware, it took me at least a week to track down everything and root it out. I just need to know what a safe site to go to is.

We can't get the controllers working with out being able to open zip files, and I can't get my sims 2 working properly with out being able to open rar files. Mss. Crumplebottom will kill my game and cause me to do a complete reinstall if I'm not extremely cautious.

You can't just use Winrar? I didn't think that installed any spyware.

I tried to use Wirar once and it was all "here's a free trial" and then "lol nope, you need to a registration code. Buy this!" I remember having a similar issue with Winzip.

It looks like the official site of the software is www.win-rar.com according to Wikipedia.

7-zip pretty much wipes the floor with every other archive manager out there. It's open source, cross-platform, trustworthy, and it handles loads of file formats. It's also completely free, forever. I see no reason to use anything else.

I use Winrar for most of my needs, but I've used 7-Zip too. Both are good in their own way.

7-Zip has been my go-to archive manager for years. To the point where I forget that it's not part of the native windows drop-down menu...

I third Winrar, never had an issue with it before. They've since kayboshed the whole trial thing or they have a pop up that keeps instigating a purchase but you never actually have to. And Aaron's got the right address for it

You must have a lot going on your mind, I suppose.
Yeah, but I'd rather have nothing for a change. How do you do it?
Well, it comes with practice. I can think of nothing.
I do not feel the need to occupy my mind with nonsense, just to avoid thinking about what really matters.

Yeah, I've had WinRAR installed for like twelve years. Never once had to purchase it; just click the "OK" button and the trial thing disappears.

Winrar has been a classic, but at the same time it's stale as fuck (or maybe just 'done'? I'm having trouble accepting that a piece of software may be done, ). 7-zip is a good (and open source) alternative that offers the same functionality, and it's probably kept up to date better.

I know Windows can handle .zip files natively and probably some other formats; IDK if they ever supported .rar, might be a proprietary format. OSX has a built-in compression/decompression tool that can deal with most formats too.

I've got a confession though... I haven't used a zip / unzip program in forever. At best I put my photos in a quick archive for backup purposes - i.e. just put them together in one file (also since you can't compress jpegs given they're already compressed).

As of Windows 8.1, windows is capable of opening both .zip and .rar files. But 7-Zip's native .7z file makes for smaller archives...
