Episodic gaming is fine for some things, but not this. Enthusiasm deflating fast.

It's hard to tell what exactly this means, but I think the obvious plus of releasing the game in parts is that we'll probably get our hands on the game a lot sooner than any of us were expecting. From a developmental standpoint, it makes a lot of sense. FFVII is huge. Now they don't have to worry about rushing the product as much, and they'll start making their money back before the game's even finished.

The logistics of how Square's going to release this and WHERE in the game they're going to decide to break up the story are the big questions. How is this going to affect the game being open-world?

It's funny, when the remake was announced my brother made an off-handed remark about how they should release the game like this and now it's happening.

EDIT: And I wouldn't take the phrase "its own unique experience" all too seriously. It sounds like lame, weightless promotional jargon.

I'll reserve judgment to see exactly what this means. The game's plot is already fundamentally broken into discrete chunks, so I think it should be possible to release the story episodically without negatively impacting the overall game -- which is to say, that once all episodes are released it should be a "full remake," which is exactly what they're advertising.

I actually had a hunch that this might happen, when I saw how close to finished the prologue looked in this trailer. "They could probably release a prologue demo right now," I thought. And then I thought, "Huh. Prologue. I guess doing this episodically is one way they could make sure to get this out in time for the 20th anniversary."

Having played Final Fantasy Dimensions, I don't think that the episodic concept is necessarily a bad one. Even though it was originally released episodically, the full game just feels like a standard Final Fantasy game, where you progress through the scenario from town to dungeon, dungeon to town. Backtracking is allowed as new episodes are released, and the game opens up in the final episodes when you get the airship.

The potential positive of this, like I said earlier, is that this is a way they can get it into the hands of players before 2018 or 2019. I can't exactly object to that.

Again, assuming of course that they're effectively releasing the full game in chunks as they develop it and finish up each section of the narrative.

Because they weren't pleased with how much money this'll generate... they decided to make it episodic...

And maybe I'm jumping the gun but typically you pay per episode, no?

Same as you, I think. I've been here a lot...
You must have a lot going on your mind, I suppose.
Yeah, but I'd rather have nothing for a change. How do you do it?
Well, it comes with practice. I can think of nothing.
I do not feel the need to occupy my mind with nonsense, just to avoid thinking about what really matters.

...Hmm. So that's how they'll fool us.

I was curious as to how much exploration will be in the remake considering the original is so massive. If this is a multi-part series, then each episode could be it's own contained group of explorable areas: Episode 1 -> Midgar, Episode 2 -> Nibelheim Flashback, etc. It makes sense because developing the whole world would be such a huge undertaking. Breaking the game into episodes might also eliminate the need for a world map to connect every town. Clever.

On the up side we could be playing this a lot sooner than we imagined, even if it's not the whole game. Plus this also means that each area will be more fleshed out, as opposed to having the whole game lacking features. I'm optimistic and fearful.

Sorry guys, I can't stop from jumping to conclusions and I'm already irrationally angry. I'm not playing with this shit, why the fuck would you mess with a formula that works.

I'm not a highminded fan, and I don't even care if I look ridiculous for throwing a tantrum.

I just don't... why... what?

Ffvii ground zeroes frontpaged . Wouldn't surprise me if this is the new norm of gaming.

my first thought:

"oh no"

Fenrir/Cerberus might have a point about getting the game sooner though but what I'm wondering is how much this is going to cost now x.x
