I get what you mean, but I think what Cat Rage Room is trying to say

Unless Cloud comes up with a single report in the ShinRa Manor briefly indicating Deepground and he'd be like, "Huh...I don't remember this. Probably another one of Hojo's secrets."
That's pretty much what I'm talking about and that's all that would be necessary.

What was the last good game with good writing you guys played? Ya'll realize that clever references aren't heavy handed "HEY LOOK GUYS THIS IS DEEPGROUND FROM THAT OTHER GAME WITH DEEPGROUND ENJOY THE REFERENCE GUYS *WINK WINK* 4 THE FANZ" affairs, right?

But just because players would know, doesn't mean the characters of both the original game and the remake would know, because the year is different.
The characters don't have to know. References are for the sake of the audience, not the player characters.

huh what???

Respectfully, I don't understand that sentence.

If what you're trying to say is that Vincent's and Reeve's ignorance of Deepground implies that the party of FFVII by extension also couldn't know about it, that doesn't mean that they couldn't include a reference.

The audience/player knows (or could know) about Deepground, and they could easily throw in a reference to Deepground that the party couldn't decipher but the player could.

References don't have to be as heavy handed as "HEY GUYS LOOK SOMETHING CALLED 'DEEPGROUND'S' A THING WE HAVEN'T HEARD ABOUT YET HUH HOW ABOUT THAT CLOUD ANYWAY TIME TO STOP SEPHIROTH"
Yeah, they can scrawl part of the word "Deepground" on a wall somewhere but as an actual source of content to beef up Part III as Chip suggests it's a nogo.

That's not the kind of reference I'm talking about either.

All that really would be needed is a vague reference about a shady medical facility where they do mako based enhancements or some shit, or a shady underground facility, or a shady reserve force of SOLDIER that nobody's ever seen, or a shady vague reference to a color coded special forces, or whatever.

Hell they could spill damn near all the beans on the entire operation and it still be canon that the party 'doesn't know about Deepground' because if there's no context to the information the party receives, they won't put pieces together to figure it out (maintaining the canon that the party isn't aware of Deepground's existence) but the players will.

That's a reference.

You know what the perfect place for an unobtrusive reference would be, whether explicit or implicit? The library puzzle in the Shinra Building. It's already about misfiled documents. So finding one that alludes to Deepground or the destruction of Modeoheim(EDIT: Banora) makes perfect sense.

Modeoheim was never destroyed, it was abandoned. Banora was destroyed.

Question: does anyone outside this forum actually care about the compilation?

Yes. That. Oops. (I usually talk about Modeoheim being an opportunity for an optional dungeon, so not sure how I messed that up.)

Amongst fans of the original? Probably not. But there are younger fans who have only played Crisis Core or seen the movie but not played the original game. I often see them commenting on FF7-related articles.

(But I will be clear that I definitely don't want compilation stuff being glaringly inserted into VII's main plot. I will enjoy subtle and optional references, but keep it to that. It was the Compilation's job to fit into FF7, not the other way around)

I usually see a lot of talk about the compilation when it comes to Zack and Aerith and how their relationship will be handled in the remake.

My YouTube channel and facebook page has attracted people who enjoy Dirge of Cerberus. S&G's facebook page sometimes get comments from people who enjoyed the Compilation. Cosplayers and fan artists often enough depict Compilation characters.

The original game stands the tallest, of course, but the Compilation isn't universally ignored or reviled when looking outside this forum.

As a whole I'm indiferent to the Compilation (except Crisis Core), that said, I'm totally indiferent on whether they'll add Compilation related stuff in the remake. Never understood what the F***ing deal was about that, Square Enix was never obliged to take either of the two directions (to add or not add).

There is a HUGE fandom for Zack, Angeal and Genesis, especially in various pairings with Cloud and Sephiroth, as you can see from AO3.

The 7th most popular pairing in the FFVII fandom is Genesis/Sephiroth
The 8th most popular is Genesis/Cloud
The 9th most popular is Genesis/Cloud/Sephiroth/Angeal/Zack

All of these have more fanfic written for them than Aerith or Aeris/Cloud.

The MOST popular pairing is Cloud/Sephiroth

Cloud features in 3,443 fics
Sephiroth features in 2,467
Zack in 2166
Genesis in 1,140
Angeal in 1,013

Angeal, Zack and Genesis are in the top ten most popular characters.

I don't understand it either.

I always got the impression that Crisis Core was well-received due to fleshing out what was already present in FF7 (namely Zack and Aeris). From what I understand, as well-liked that game is, everything to do with Genesis is still pretty much a joke. Is Gackt even a marketable celebrity in Japan anymore?

I bring it up because personally, I don't hold any attachment to anything new the compilation had to offer in terms of plot. Slash fangirls aside, I don't really see anyone having super fond sentiments towards them from anyone else either. I obviously don't think this will happen, but I'd honestly have a lot more respect if Square Enix simply acknowledged its failure, admit that FF7 shouldn't have been a franchise in the first place, and discontinued it with with a solid remake of the original game. I mean, most of the reason I'm not super hype for this remake is simply because I don't like the thought of being reminded of sub par story elements sprinkled into a narrative I genuinely enjoyed in my childhood.

I mean, obviously that isn't gonna happen because Square Enix is a company that wants to make money, and milking unnecessary franchise is a sure fire way of doing that. Also, my opinion doesn't really matter because there is a good chance I'm gonna pass on playing the new game anyway

I love the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII franchise. To me it gives on how things went now and then between the original game and what-not in different point of views and ect.

Sure it has some flaws, but as a fan of the franchise, I'd love for it to be referenced in the remake to show that it actually existed. But knowing my luck, the Remake is a reboot all together as I've always kept on predicting.

The main thing I dislike the most, both Original Game and Compilation, is Hojo.
