I know this probably sounds kinda dramatic but I think this really cements the end of my relationship with Buffy.
Part of the hope with these initial talks of the reboot is an underlying commitment to make ammends for the horrible toxicity of Whedon and the original run. I guess my thinking right now is that this singles out Michelle, who was one of the (if not THE) youngest cast members of Mutant Enemy at the time. There are anecdotes of Joss not being allowed to be alone with her. While her relationship with Marsters as an adult was seemingly fine, I can't really formulate these thoughts without mentioning that
one song he wrote for her that was frankly pedophilic af.
That is to say, she was one of the people done the most dirty by the original production. More gravely so given that she was a fucking child. Now that she's gone, there's not much of a shot that any reboot can promise to make up for all the past crap, in my opinion.
idk i think it's all just making me incredibly sad. I don't think I could really handle a reboot/sequel with Sarah as Buffy without Michelle as Dawn there. AFAIK the two had an IRL surrogate sister type bond, and the relationship between the characters supercedes anything else going on in Buffy's story. Have a reboot/sequel with that gone feels so wrong and prohibitively upsetting for me. This is the best way I can explain as to why.
That isn't even touching how Dawn was treated in the comics, good lord.
