From the developers point of view it's not pompous and silly at all. It's a serious worry that you're putting time and money into something that only a minority of people will see, when you could instead put it into something mandatory that everyone will see. Right, that's one of the reasons I'm skeptical when people say something is about romance and not sex. If those 2 things were truly separate, there'd be a lot more romance with ugly people going on. There aren't many "romantic novels" where the love interest is a short, fat, homeless man.

That whole Wutai storyline being optional is perhaps even more extreme than Yuffie being optional. That's a big juicy chunk of content right there.

I'm 90% sure it isn't true in the original Xenoblade Chronicles though. It's been a while since I played it, but I'm sure I would've noticed that, because all of the main characters, except maybe Ricki, are essential to the story.
