Those were the defaults for the original games, yes. At least in the NA versions.

Ok, finished it. Episode Prompto was kinda....meh, I guess. Had way more fun with Gladio. The alternate route through chapter 13 is nice, although I wish the option to do both was there. I like the game. It pulls off the "cinematic" feel that Squeenix has been tring to get right for ages...

Episode Gladio was great. Took X's advice, and did it after Gladio comes back to the party. Wish it would have been a bit longer, but not sure how to have made it so without it being tedious. Got me mah Genji Blade, tho, so I'm happy.

Y'know, I just learned that you can do combo finishers and pressing forward and away from enemies changes your combos. I went through the entire game last year not knowing this.

The block is a circular shield ala Smash Bros rather than the frontal one from the other games. It is hard if you get ganged up on; that's what the rest of the team is for. Some characters have good crowd control moves. Y'shola's Holy, for instance.
