Same here, ChipNoir. I'm still sore about the last time I played, going into overtime 3 times and still losing in the end. Which is why I don't touch Blitzball at all if I can help it. May give it another go using these tips but I can't see myself ever being good at Blitzball :P

I'm a sucker - I keep the Besaid Aurochs team intact 'cause...because.

I'm pretty good at Blitzball, though. Nab a couple of essential techniques for your players and you're laughing. I once levelled the entire team to 99 before (and that's where Keepa, of all people, reaches 99 Shot).

I may not get around to joining in this playthrough, but I'll enjoy this thread, nonetheless :)

Basic of the Basics for the uninitiated:

You have four team positions:

Forward (Left / Right): These are the closest players to the enemy goal. Their job is to get the ball down the field and take shots. Choose players with high HP and SH.

Midfielder (Center): This player is your best passer. He's designed to get the ball where it needs to be (To the Forwards). Make sure his PA is very high.

Rearguard (Left / Right): These are the two players whose job it is to protect your goalie from enemy attackers. They should be tough enough to tackle and steal the ball. (I forget the abbreviations... BL I think?)

Goalie: When all else fails, this is the player who protects your goal from the ball. Make sure his CA is very high.

Chapter 1: We Called It Sin
(aka "Crews of What?")

Time: Saturday July 1st to Wednesday July 5th

Target: When you reach the cutscene pictured below at the docks of Besaid Island.

01_Target.png

Launching this a bit early (well early for the States anyways), and giving an extra day to boot just to help people get started. After this I am going to try and stick to four days per chapter unless we decide more (or less) time is warranted for a specific chapter.

So we have the opening linear bits of the game here and we will have met our entire battle cast by the time this chapter is over which is kind of rare for a Final Fantasy game. We'll also get a nice overview of the game's major recurring mechanics and puzzles - underwater travel and fights, the Cloister of Trials, the way Summons work in this game which is also very unique. It's a good solid first chapter though there is even more story than game here as we learn about Spira and its inhabitants.

Discussion:
  • What version of the game are you playing: the original or one of the remasters?
  • If you are playing a remaster, which version of the Sphere Grid are you using? How are you finding its progression? If you are playing the original, what do you think about the Sphere Grid in general as a leveling system?
  • What do you think about the Cloister of Trial puzzles as a recurring puzzle? Are they too tricky? Too Easy? Just plain annoying?
  • What do you think about the drastic shift from the ATB to the CTB system for battles? What about the ability to switch party members on the fly?

Again, feel free to post any questions you have while playing. Good luck!

Streaming this at 2pm GMT, so that's just an under hour!

Is there also going to be an article for this, as I'm fairly certain I recall one being made for Tactics?

Concerning the various teams, I actually had the most trouble with the Psyches for forever. Purely because they had Nimrook (I think?) as a goalie, and the guy could catch anything barring a maxed-out Sphere Shot to the face.

Could I ask somebody else to pop on on the FP for me. I'm gonna be busy today with my daughter's b-day party.

Just finished streaming the first chapter a while ago, here are my thoughts so far...

What version of the game are you playing: the original or one of the remasters?
Remastered version on the PS4.

If you are playing a remaster, which version of the Sphere Grid are you using? How are you finding its progression? If you are playing the original, what do you think about the Sphere Grid in general as a leveling system?
Because it's been so long, I'm using the original Sphere Grid. I'm progressing pretty well so far, Tidus just learned Flee and Yuna's got to NulBlaze. It's coming along really nicely.

What do you think about the Cloister of Trial puzzles as a recurring puzzle? Are they too tricky? Too Easy? Just plain annoying?
The first one's not too bad and finding the treasure isn't insanely difficult either. I'm not the biggest fan of the Trials, but thankfully, it's not a major part of the game and it's something I just have to plow through in order to reach the goal. They're just a means to an end.

What do you think about the drastic shift from the ATB to the CTB system for battles? What about the ability to switch party members on the fly?
I quite like the turn-taking as opposed to ATB. It gives me more time to properly plan and actually know when I'm going to probably die. :awesome:

As for switching party members, big fan of that. In other games, I'd always fret about who I was going to end up taking in my party to level up. One tip I always go by whenever playing the game: make sure your party members have at least one turn to get points to move through the Sphere Grid - even if you're just using Defend with Yuna.

Chapter One

What version of the game are you playing: the original or one of the remasters?

Remaster for the PS3

If you are playing a remaster, which version of the Sphere Grid are you using? How are you finding its progression? If you are playing the original, what do you think about the Sphere Grid in general as a leveling system?

Standard Sphere Grid, and the progression is slow at the moment. I do my first AP grinding in the next chapter but I have saved the game just before the end of this chapter so that I can battle a bit in the next couple of days. I expect to at least get Haste for Tidus.

What do you think about the Cloister of Trial puzzles as a recurring puzzle? Are they too tricky? Too Easy? Just plain annoying?

They are easy to do, I just take too long to finish them as I’m always putting the spheres in the wrong place. This time though I actually completed Besaid’s Cloister without making any mistakes. So yes, they are annoying but only because I usually run around lost for a while.

What do you think about the drastic shift from the ATB to the CTB system for battles? What about the ability to switch party members on the fly?

FFX’s battle system is one of my favourite in the series although I’m not too fussed about the CTB system. It does come in handy to know just when to grab Yuna and cast NulWhatever or get an Aeon to soak up some damage. I love being able to switch characters. It's always reminded me of Breath of Fire IV and I do love that game. I just need to remember to let everyone have a turn in battle.

  • Imported my Al Bhed Primers from my other save file. I have yet to play through a game of FFX from the beginning with all Primers. Just a little extra dialogue I can look forward to understanding this time around
  • Exploited the free potions x3 you get from the Al Bhed on the ship. Wished I hadn’t spent so much time getting 99 when there are plenty of opportunities to get quite a few in this chapter and in the next. Oh well, on the brighter side I got a few Grenades out of it
  • Forgot where the dog was. Spent ages trying to locate him. I do this every time -_-
  • Also spent a while trying to find a Garuda to fight. Had to look it up to see that they don’t appear in Besaid apart from in the tutorials. Greatly disappointed
  • I’ve only just discovered that you can move Tidus during the end of chapter cutscene. Was making a nuisance of myself and now I’m going to see if there are other cutscenes I can ruin the mood of :monster:
  • FFX is one of the four Final Fantasy games that I have completed, probably because I enjoy the battle system so much. I don’t know if I’ll keep posting my progress but I will be playing along

Chapter 2: To Do Our Best
(aka "YOU CAN'T DO IT KID, I'M THE BEST, YOU'RE OUTTA YOUR LEAGUE.")

Time: Wednesday July 5th to Tuesday July 11th

Target: The save point after you defeat (or lose to) your Blitzball rivals.

02_Target.png

So we start with our first battle against Sin and face another Sinspawn shortly after the terrible stuff that happens. Upon arrival at Kilika we actually have a bit of freedom to move about and level in the woods before facing another boss, and of course another lovely Cloister of Trials. The big thing here of course is the absolutely amazing Sending cutscene which is about as iconic as FFX imagery gets.

After a night time boat ride which is one of the better story moments in the game so far we have the ability to learn the powerful Jecht Shot if we can overcome... text bubbles. We then arrive in Luca, the home of Blitzball a pretty cool Sphere theatre where, in the days before Youtube, you could listen to the game's soundtrack and watch its cutscenes at any time. There is some mandatory faffing about before you finally play Blitzball and are expected to right out the gate tackle the toughest team in the league. That's fair.

FYI: You can level spam the Sinspawn during the Sin fight so long as your HP holds out. Go nuts and get some free Sphere Levels (you can do the same thing to the subsequent Sinspawn fight but it's only with Wakka and Tidus and is harder).

Discussion:
  • What did you think of the Sending sequence? How does it hold up today?
  • Did you face the optional boss Lord Ochu? How did you handle him?
  • How was Blitzball for you this time around? Do you plan on playing it regularly? Were you able to beat the Luca Goers?
  • Now that you've got some levels on you, what are your plans for Kimahri?
How will you be developing him.

btw it is strongly recommended that you NOT fight lord ochu, as coming back later and bribing him gives you MASSIVE reward for what amounts to pocket change at that point

sort of like with ultima later

I'm hoping to get the PS2 version of the game tomorrow after work, I don't own that one so I'm borrowing it from my cousin buuuut she forgot to bring it on Saturday. Would love to play the Remaster but my play time would be quite limited. I'll catch up within a week, hopefully. :awesome:
