FF7OG Timeline of Doom

Despite the FF-Wikia's very lengthy FFVII Compilation Timeline, they don't seem to list any specific dates for any happenings in the actual game aside from:

[ ν ] – εуλ 0008
January 14 - The Diamond Weapon attacks Midgar, see "Raid on Midgar."
January 21 – Meteor destroys Midgar.

Another oddity, is that the entire contents of the game prior to this begin (apparently) on December 8, leaving the first two discs happening in just five weeks (four if we must include Tifa's coma)

Is this something we agree on? Is this canon? So many events happen, world shattering events. I always thought the game's events took place over a matter of months. Even if we're going by the “FF7's world is the size of Texas” theory, it still confuses me. I can try to draft up a timeline:

[ ν ] – εуλ 0007

December 8 – Reactor 1 explodes shortly after noon. The events of Seventh Heaven occur that evening
December 9 – Reactor 5 explodes in the morning. Cloud falls into Aeris' church and escapes with her from the Turks, spending the night at her house.
December 10 – In the morning, Cloud and Aeris meet with Tifa at Don Corneo's, before Wall Market officially opens, so lets say before 8am, where they are subjected to Corneo's wife-choosing ritual (first thing in the morning?) and then they interrogate him and learn of Shinra's plan to bomb the pillar. They race to get there around Noon, but fail to stop the bombing. Cloud, Tifa and Barret arrive at Elmyra's where they listen to her sob story and leave immediately, finding the golden shiny wire of hope immediately, beginning the fifty metre climb (rock-climbing websites assure me this would take eight hours, more considering one of them is missing an arm) this would land them at Shinra Headquarters around midnight.
December 11 – Miraculously, everyone at Shinra HQ is still at work. Assuming the Shinra HQ events happen in real-time and not game-metaphor-time, they meet Nanaki at around 4am. They are imprisoned and go to sleep... for two hours, in which time Sephiroth ransacks the building. At 6am, Rufus delivers his inauguration speech to the party and the motorcycle chase begins. The party travels to Kalm where Cloud tells his story and they go to sleep.
December 12 – Realistically, the party wouldn't make it to the Chocobo Farm before nightfall.
December 13 – Arriving at the Chocobo Farm first thing in the morning, the party gets some chocobos and crosses the marsh, going through the Midgar marshes at midday and sleeping at Fort Condor that evening.
December 14 – The party begins this busy day by fighting a battle at Fort Condor. Around midday, they encounter Yuffie in the woods where they join her party. In the afternoon, they arrive in Lower Junon, where Cloud saves Priscilla from drowning and they fight Bottomswell. As a reward, they are given a place to sleep with Priscilla's family.
December 15 – Shinra launches two attacks on Fort Condor today. It is also Rufus Shinra's Junon parade. The party boards a cargo vessel that takes them across the ocean in a matter of hours, in which most of the crew is killed. Spending a busy half hour in Costa del Sol, the party leaves. Realistically they couldn't make it to Corel on foot, so they camp on the road.
December 16 – The party scales Mount Corel, an event that would take up to sixteen hours. They arrive in Corel early evening, and ascend to the Gold saucer as night falls. Again, assuming the events happen in real time, Cloud is arrested that evening and taken down to Corel Prison.
December 17 – The events of Corel Prison occur, culminating in Cloud's chocobo race around noon. The party drives away, and since they are now in a car, they can safely get to Gongaga before nightfall. Shinra launches their fourth attack on Fort Condor.
December 18 – The party travels to Cosmo Canyon and a fantastic repairman fixes their buggy overnight. Shinra launches their fifth and sixth attacks on Fort Condor.
December 19 – The party travels to Nibelheim, where they encounter Sephiroth, Vincent, and the black cloaked men. They probably leave right away, but the Nibel Mountains are winding and treacherous, so they have to camp there. Shinra launches their seventh attack on Fort Condor.
December 20 – Somehow, miraculously, the party arrives in Rocket, meets Cid, and crashes with the Tiny Bronco. It takes the rest of the day for it to begin moving again. Shinra launches their eighth attack on Fort Condor.
December 21 – The Yuffie materia debacle happens first thing in the morning, but the party is on foot again, so they could not realistically make it to Wutai before having to camp.
December 22 – The party gets to Wutai, gets their materia back, and can make it half-way back to the Bronco.
December 23 – The party can make it back to the Tiny Bronco today.
December 24 – Through some divine inspiration, the party knows exactly where to go to find the Keystone, and after the plane gets them to the Weaponsmith's for noon (again: miraculously) they arrive at the Gold Saucer by late afternoon, where Cloud competes for the Keystone and they are forced to spend the evening at the Ghost Hotel (if they celebrated Christmas, this would be nice and apt). Cloud goes on his date with ??? and Cait Sith betrays the party. Shinra launches it's ninth attack on Fort Condor.
December 25 – The party heads to the Temple of the Ancients, and Cloud gives Sephiroth the black materia. What an eventful Christmas!
December 26 – Cloud contemplates Boxing Day by regretting boxing his girlfriend almost to death. But the party cheers him up and together they go on the hunt for Aeris. Imagining that they only needed to bomb once to find the Earth Harp...
December 27 – The party enjoys the forgotten city but cannot find Aeris. Cloud goes to sleep, but wakes up and Disc 1 ends.
December 28 – Disc 2 begins, and the party makes it all the way to Icicle Inn before Cloud is punched out by Elena or they stay at the Inn.
December 29 – After an early morning snowboard, the party spends half the day wandering around a glacier until they pass out.
December 30 – The party scales Gaia's cliff, and mountaineering websites assure me this takes until at least tomorrow.
December 31 – The party enters the crater and shit goes down. Tifa celebrates the new year in a coma.

[ ν ] – εуλ 0008

January 7 – Tifa wakes up. Sapphire Weapon raids Junon and the Highwind crew mutinies.
January 8 – The Highwind crew finds Cloud (rather easily) and Tifa leaves the party.
January 9 – The first huge materia mission happens in the morning, the next happens that afternoon.
January 10 – The party visits Tifa and wheelchair!Cloud and Weapon attacks. Tifa and Cloud take a short but profoudly intimate dip in the Lifestream and emerge for a welcome back speech before dinner.
January 11 – Cloud takes his new airship to Junon, where he hijacks a submarine. Later that day, he goes to space.
January 12 – Cloud returns from space.
January 13 – The party visits Bugenhagen that morning, and he gives them an idea that sends them to the Ancient City, where they are told to get back in their submarine and find the Key of the Ancients. Along the way, Vincent meets Lucrecia and the party explores the sunken Gelnika.
January 14 – The party brings the Key to Bugenhagen first thing in the morning, where they learn about Holy. The Diamond Weapon attacks Midgar and the day ends with a parachute ride and the death of pretty much everyone in Shinra.
January 15 – Cloud sends everyone away until January 20
January 19 – Cloud and Tifa have sex! Canonically.
January 20 – They descend into the Crater. Spelunking website assure me that to spelunk the 220km radius of a Texas-sized Planet would take more than a day, but lets say they don't have to go very deep to get to the Planet's juicy core.
January 21 – Meteor destroys Midgar

but it seems untenable. And in order for it to work, events have to happen at weird times, and no one gets any sleep. I have a hard time believing that this is the timeline we agree on. According to this, Cloud knew Aeris for just over two weeks, why would he be boo-hooing about it two years later?

I know I'm not always a canon-friendly fan, but abiding by an official timeline instead of my own fan-created one isn't that big of a concession... as long as the official one isn't stupid.

Thanks Ite I haven't stopped laughing for the last half hour

I don't think that the exact date when Diamond Weapon attacks Midgar has been stated. It must be derived from the assumption that Diamond Weapon's attack and the team stopping Hojo all take place on the same day, the latter which happens seven days before Meteor falls. Recall that Red XIII states, on the Highwind, that Bugenhagen said that Meteor will fall in seven days.

Even if not exactly January 14, in my headcanon I'd probably place the Diamond Weapon attack on January 12 or 13.

But yes, the extremely short time in which the full FFVII game takes place IS CANON. Advent Children Complete gave us the final date for Meteorfall, as seen on the monument at the beginning of the movie.

The official timeline from the FFVII 10th Anniversary Ultimania and the CC Ultimania states the reactor bombing as happening on December 9th. See the reactor bombing date repeated in Barret's 10th Anniversary profile (and in Cloud's profile).

Final Fantasy VII:
December 9 [ ν ] – εуλ 0007
->
January 21 [ ν ] – εуλ 0008

I agree, it's a very ugly timeline. I recommend that you stick to a fan-created timeline in your writings for the sake of fleshing out the story and character connections.

According to this, Cloud knew Aeris for just over two weeks, why would he be boo-hooing about it two years later?

That part is actually easy enough to believe.

And, hell, it's stated in-game that the events of FFVIII's first disc all happened in less than three days:

-The first day of the game, Squall has his field exam in the Fire Cavern
-When the students are called for the mission to Dollet, the announcement goes out as "All students who participated in today's field exam, report to the [2nd floor hallway]. I repeat: All students who took the field exam, report to the [2nd floor hallway]" -- so we're still dealing with the first day here
-When Squall's team prepares to invade the TV station in Timber, the events in Dollet are referred to as having happened "yesterday": "Dollet has a communication tower that can transmit and receive radio waves. It had been abandoned for a long time, but the Galbadian Army got it up and running yesterday"
-The rest of the disc from leaving Timber to trying to assassinate Edea obviously happens in short order -- when the party meets with General Caraway, he refers to the parade as happening "tonight": "There is going to be a ceremony tonight to commemorate the event"

It's unclear how long the rest of the game lasts, but the first disc breezes by. In comparison, FFVII's first disc lasts much longer.

I agree that your disc one timeline is way to packed but

January 15 – Cloud sends everyone away until January 20
January 19 – Cloud and Tifa have sex! Canonically.
January 20 – They descend into the Crater. Spelunking website assure me that to spelunk the 220km radius of a Texas-sized Planet would take more than a day, but lets say they don't have to go very deep to get to the Planet's juicy core.
January 21 – Meteor destroys Midgar

Where does this come from? I'm pretty sure the gang never actually left, they juststayed on the ship and watched Cloud and Tifa have sex that very day.

Which reminds me, the evening Cloud and Tifa stay behind at the airship alone is always referred to as "the night before the final battle." If they were only alone for one night, then the team spent the better part of a week making their way through the planet.

Yes. In the scene where Cloud sends everyone away, it is said that Meteorfall is in seven days. Later, when Tifa and Cloud are outside the airship, they are talking about how Meteorfall is tomorrow.

I deduced that six days pass, wherein the party scatters and reconvenes.

They aren't talking about Meteorfall being the next day; just the battles ahead. With no way of knowing how much time they would need to get to Sephiroth, I can't imagine they blew 1/5 of the entire time the game lasted letting Meteor get closer.

Touché! So they could actually spend that entire last week descending the crater (with only one save crystal??)

That's what I've always thought. Probably got lost a few times, wanted to explore everywhere before they decided where to set that Save Crystal, were extra careful so as to not have to do much backtracking if they got a Game Over, etc. :awesome:

Not to mention that the gameplay's placement of Bugenhagen's death is not compatible with a satisfying narrative, given current scenes.

Disc 2 ends with the Highwind rushing towards the Northern Crater and we end up there immediately on disc 3. It is only on disc 3 that Bugenhagen can die. Are we really supposed to assume that in the midst of fighting against time to save the planet, Nanaki insisted on a return to Cosmo Canyon for one reason or another?

To make this fit a coherent narrative, a rewrite is necessary. Either place Bugenhagen's death before disc 3 or place it after the Meteor-Holy event.

The latter would create a gap at the beginning of Episode:Nanaki in the OtWtaS series, because a mention of Bugenhagen dying after Nanaki returns is missing, but it wouldn't strictly speaking contradict anything that is said in the first passages of that entry.

The former could easily be worked into a remake. In gameplay it would open up the best window to have the scene available as soon as Diamond Weapon appears. In a novel, I would assume that Bugenhagen dies when Nanaki returns to Cosmo Canyon to ponder his reasons for fighting (before finally returning to the Highwind along with everyone else). The risk I feel, especially in a game, if Bugenhagen was to die at this moment is that the story would break away from Cloud and Tifa in an awkward way, before returning to their perspective on the Highwind.

But if you ask me, what really took time from Cloud & gang in the Northern Crater is that they got stuck in XMVTES. :awesome:

That or they wasted too much time with Movers and Magic Pots. They just had to get that "Knights of the Round was born" notice first.

Imagine how different Advent Children would have been if Kadaj had summoned Knights of Round in Edge. Holy crap. Whatever is trapped within their realm would be turned to dust.
