Modded your X-Box? Say goodbye to X-Box Live

One million X-Box Live users banned due to have modded X-Boxes.

It's oh-so enticing: you find a copy of a brand new game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on a pirate site and the temptation to download it is too strong.

Well, that temptation may have cost up to 1 million users of Microsoft's Xbox Live the ability to use that service. According to a report in InformationWeek, Microsoft has banned as many as a million players from Xbox Live for altering their consoles in order to play pirated versions of games.

This week, Activision's new Call of Duty was released, and InformationWeek speculated that because pirated versions of the game appeared on various sharing sites in advance of the release, the game's developer may have exhorted Microsoft to enact the bans.

That sure sucks to be them. And if these consoles are permanently blacklisted, who wants to bet the fuckers will just sell the banned X-Box to Gamestop or something, some poor schmuck will buy it, and then wonder why the hell they can't get X-Box LIVE to work? :monster:

I thought that was old news... About the bans (in general, not the higher numbers due to CoD:MW2)...

(Good) stores that buy second-hand consoles usually check if they've been modded, and refuse to buy them. The not-so-good ones usually inform the customers buying them that the boxes have been modded, so there's little danger of someone buying a modded 360 and wondering why the hell they can't get on XBL.

And as for the idiots who got banned for modding their consoles? Serves them fucking right.

I was planning on modding my future Wii so I can play Fatal Frame 4 since those Nintendo assholes don't think it's worth it to translate it. At least there's nothing worthwhile to play online for the Wii anyways. :awesome:

See, if it was the PC version being ripped, there wouldn't be such a banhammer :monster:

But honestly the only reason why I'd illegally obtain a game is if I couldn't obtain it legally (ie. it's not in stock in my game stores and they refuse to try and find one for me, and I really don't dig the eBay/importing from outside stuff because I have pretty much no way of paying for it like, no PayPal or credit card at the mo). Otherwise, not spending money on them is just fucking lazy.

And although I can't really access XBL due to my shitty wireless, I'd find getting myself banned from the service a shame, and totally not worth the shit I'd have to pull off to get the game I'd want.

EDIT: And if you have the time to do that sort of thing to your console, you clearly have enough time to look for a job and earn a bit of money instead :monster:

I was told that if you play pirated software on the PS3 it will break and you will need to get a new one. I was further told you have up to four chances, and after the forth - say goodbye to your console. I am not sure (nor will try it) if this is true.

Its a good thing I decided to borrow my friend's hacked PSP instead of hacking my own XD Although I have to put up with the Darth Vadar staring back at me while I'm playing FFVII.

I was thinking about modding my PS3 (or an Xbox 360 if I ever get one). But after hearing about this I'm no longer bothered. I don't buy huge amounts of games anyway so I don't mind paying for the ones I do.

Glad I'm safe. c: I haven't done anything like that for my Xbox and I wasn't really planning to, but usually with Manga and Anime I'll watch it/read it online before I go out and by it, to make sure I like it. With games it's much easier if you've got friends who are HUGE gamers, and can just borrow the game you want from them and try it out. Or hey, renting a game does not cost a lot at all, do it that way. I think it's stupid to read/watch/play something you REALLY like and then just steal it. If you like it, then you should buy it. c:

I believe they ban gamertags of those who sign in on modded consoles. That effectively both bans players and blacklists their consoles.

Even if they create a new account, they'll still lose their gamerscore - which is a pretty small price to pay, I think. But they'll still lose their online cumulative "career" info from games like Halo.

Plus, the last time I checked (which admittedly was years ago), Microsoft had decided to make it impossible to copy saved game files across profiles to stop achievement "sharing." If that's still the case, then they're pretty screwed if they put hours into their games...

Seriously, I don't get the point of modding consoles to play pirated games. I mean, back when people modded their console to play imported games, yeah, that made sense. But, if pirated games are of the same quality as the pirated DVDs I've seen... well. I know it's cliche, but they're only really cheating theirselves.

I know it works like that for the PS3/PSP/DS, but I thought that for the Wii and XBox360 were still region-locked (for everything on the Wii, and depending on the game for the XBox but still mostly locked).

PS3 can't be modded, well if anyone tries to do so would result in an epic fail. so either way, the PS3 community still needs to pay for their goodies and Ad Hoc systems if they wanna play some nice Dissidia or Call of Duty games. Still, shit is not cash for the pirate world : (
