...until we've been at Bluehost for a year and we can skip town, :monster:.

So, some questions to you guys:

* Are we still experiencing problems with CPU limits, database errors or other downtimes?
(Personally, I'm no longer getting the daily batch of database errors in my e-mail inbox)
* Do you want to move to another host?
* If so, what host should that be? Note that we'll need at least 300 GB of bandwidth / month (which is a bit more than our current peak at ~270), 2 GB of storage (we currently use a good 700 MB, but that'll continue to grow steadily), 1 MySQL database but preferably more, a price of $100,- or less (preferably less), and - and this is the importanter bit - a higher CPU limit or none at all. Note that, as far as I'm aware, we never hit the CPU limit again since updating to vB, but it's better to be safe than sorry, and that's usually seen as Bluehost's main weakness.)
* One-year contract at most, I don't like two-year or longer, since we'll be stuck with them for a long while then.

And yes, we have amassed enough cash to pay for another year of hosting. Almost two, even, at the current hosting cost.

..You know, I haven't had *any* bluehost problems in a long, long time. I totally forgot about it.

I'm afraid it'll have similar problems :monster:.

But if the problems we've had earlier stopped, then I don't see a reason to move.

I was on bluehost and had a lot of problems, I moved to hostgator and the problems stopped... so no you won't have similar problems :monster:

I haven't had a lot of problems in regards to BlueHost, honestly.

As I'm not a computer expert at all, I cannot speak with authority, but:

Is it possible that there are going to be issues due to the fact of the activity on these (and then, similar) boards regardless of host?

My issues only have been with the forums, when I would get a few 'database errors'. I could always get onto the front page.

Anyhow, I thought to give my $.02 worth. :hohum:

Yeah, possibly. Most hosts like these host hundreds of sites on a single server, each of which are vying for resources. To prevent one site take up too much resources, most hosts have a CPU limit in place, i.e. your site cannot use more than X amount of processor time during a moving window of about 90 seconds. We exceeded that with our previous forum software, but I guess that can be blamed on the software itself and it being inefficient.

like problems not similar to the ones we're having right now.

Also, if you've been having problems getting onto the forums recently, I'm pretty sure it's because of the extra load caused by the shoutbox. And I'm pretty sure we've been having less problems because of less activity. And I'm considering going to that Hostgator now, unless someone says it has similar problems.

I've told about 3 of my friends about hostgator and they all like it so far. One of them did have trouble for the first couple weeks, for some reason the site would just go offline or be slow but he didn't tell them about it or would tell them two days after the downtime occured XD. Eventually he contacted them as it was happening and they fixed whatever the problem was and now everything is just fine. So they fix any problems that are going on very quickly :D

Another friend of mine was on bluehost and he kept getting weird php errors... after the move all was well. What's sad is his forum was maybe a fourth of the size this one was.

If nothing else we try it for a month and if it doesn't work we move :monster:
But I think it should be fine. Plus they don't care about swearing or porn. Not saying we should allow porn but just in case someone does post it and it goes overlooked, we have nothing to worry about :P

(I should see if hostgator has a referral thing XD)

Yeah, if only the monthly contract wasn't $2/month more than the yearly one, or $4 than the 3-yearly one :monster:. I'd prefer to be able to go for a year minimum, but then again, I guess monthly can work if we're just going to try them out, then go for the yearly one - if it's easy to switch, that is.

I'd have to ponder on getting the database over - attempts at getting a database dump have all failed over the past few months. I'd either have to send 'em a copy of my ID to get console access, or see if I can get support to make one for me.

Okay, so the problems we've been having may be directly related to how much resources we consume. Bluehost no longer displays error messages for that, but instead 'throttles' CPU usage, which effectively makes our site slower when it's busy - and quite possibly too slow, so vB thinks the database server went down. There's a graph thingy that we had our CPU thingy throttled for 1700 seconds 24 hours ago, but none since then.

But I'll keep an eye out on that. I've checked, and we can cancel our subscription with Bluehost until 14 days before the automagic renewal - which is still a month and a half away - so I'll see which weekend I can plan a move of sorts.

We need to move. Now.

We need a place with unlimited/nigh-unlimited bandwidth, and something close to a dedicated server. This shit is ridiculous. I'll help fucking pay for it if necessary, but this garbage has got to stop.

Um, if it helps, GoDaddy is a hosting place, or so I'm under that impression. My mother uses it and the server has never failed her unless the site went under construction. And that hasn't happened at all. I own a forum with it and two blogs and they run flawlessly.

I don't know about the price range you are looking for, but here is the site to GoDaddy. I also don't know if it supports vB...

FCF is on GoDaddy and it sucks. We're going to move to another host as soon as possible.

I bet those forums of your mom don't have to process over 15.000 pageviews per day? :monster:.

Also, no u to GoDaddy, just out of principle.

Dedicated hosting is far too expensive, and probably not required - one that's half less nazi about CPU usage could already do the trick, imo. And 300 (but preferably 500) GB/month would be fine.

Actually, its blog my mother is using :)
And it processing over that, and my sister old Naruto blog got 19 thousand views every three-four days. That might not be that good for over four days, but its a lot of views on a tiny blog.

But, I guess your right though. People being active and constantly clicking pages could be a problem on GoDaddy. I was only suggesting it :(
