So I just watched this...

I was really into it until the part where learning the language makes you see the future and then problems are magically solved by stable time loop paradoxes.

Started out strong and then the end was just like "Huh. Okay then."

Just come back from seeing this, it was fantastic.

Words just about manage to escape right now, but my mind is really blown in a good way.

I just watched this tonight. I really liked it. :monster: It kinda captivated me and I was really wanted to see what would happen next, and next. I'm glad they focused a lot more on language and 'getting to know them' in this movie. So many 'alien movies' are always dismal and depressing and about aliens conquering earth or all humans are bastards except one or two, yadda yadda. Enough with all the constant action and pessimistic shit.
I want more movies like Arrival, pls. :monster:
Although they did have to add in a part about some soldiers attacking the aliens, but for once I felt okay with it. It didn't last very long in the overall movie time, it was done by a few soldiers and not the leaders (and there wasn't some blatant antagonist constantly thwarting the communication with Abbot and Castello(?)).
I like that the beginning of the movie was about language, which was the whole theme of the movie, and it was kind of exciting to see the communication process.

I didn't catch on that the woman's daughter was something to happen in the future until the very end, and even then I wasn't totally sure. I think it's one of those movies where reading what other people say about it helps your understanding, or 2-3 watchings of it.
I caught on pretty early that the aliens were using her 'memories' to communicate with her though. Just thought that the memories already happened and wasn't still to come. :monster:

Sad to think that she meets Ian and they seem pretty happy and have a babby together and then... I guess she reveals that she saw that future all along and that their daughter was going to die? So...he leaves her because of that? That's kinda dickish, just saying.

I was just thinking after watching this movie, that if I was sent back in time, there's just some things I would definitely do all over again. Because the happiness was worth the pain.
Basically if I realized that my daughter was going to die at a young age, and my husband knew about it from the start but never told me... I think I would have mixed feelings, but I know that in the end, I would feel such a thing was totally worth it. To bring my one-of-a-kind child into the world, to get to know her, give her life. Even if you could see the heartbreak waiting to happen... Sometimes it's just so much better to have met someone, then never have met them at all.

Anyways done rambling, I really loved the show. :monster: Want more alien movies like this!

I thought this movie was excellent. The sound design in particular, but I really like how they approached
the aliens. At first I didn't like the Cthulhu style things but from the perspective of communication and language this was really interesting. And the non-linear-time thing really gave this its sci-fi edge. I realise that's a bit weird to be saying about an alien movie but if it didn't have the time warp shenanigans it might have been a little flat just based on the way the whole story was framed.

I want more though. The whole "humanity will help us in 3000 years" thing definitely has me intrigued.
