The only stereotype that I really see Barret fill is that of the JRPG tough angry guy who's really a softy at heart. He fits way more into that than of some racist black picture.

As for his Compilation design, the net is...weird...but I'd hardly say that's stereotypical. I've never seen anyone of any color wear something like that. I didn't really think anything of the cornrows either, would you have felt better if he styled his hair like Cloud's? :monster:

And you know for all the shit the writers get for Tifa being "just a mom," no one ever seems to notice that she's the only hero in the movie to START a fight. She throws the first punch.

Tifa did throw the first punch, didn't see? I never thought of that before...

But I guess she probably wouldn't have if Loz had just turned around and left...

Derp.

You don't have to be the first one to throw a punch to start a fight.

Loz clearly initiated the confrontation by threatening her. I don't see the relevance in point out that she threw the first punch either.

It's something.......... I think Mukki would wear :awesome:

So Tifa is Molly Weasley. GREAT.

*hates Molly Weasley*

*Not because she's a fussy mom-type character but I find her to be kind of a bitch*

I'm kind of surprised by the backlash at Tifa being a mom, when it was completely within the bounds of her characterization to become one, and -- oh yeah! -- there's nothing inherently bad or anti-feminist about being a mom!

But I suppose that's a topic for another thread. We've pretty much hashed this one out, haven't we? Now all I can think of is Barret with Cloud hair...

@Esuna: I think people dislike it because the kids make it hard to recruit her into your party. :P

Never said it was! I don't think Molly Weasley is a bad character either I just think she's a bitch :P

It's just a dumb way to shoehorn female characters that happens time and time again in fiction. I also really hate how it's become the primary attribute to her characterization in the compilation. I begrudgingly accept it in this case because of the ongoing theme of motherhood and the importance of mothers in FF7 (owait wasn't I supposed to write an article on that oops).

Though in terms of shoehorning female characters into stupid 2-dimensional archetypes, Aeris got it waaaaay worse than Tifa.

He clearly just wanted to play Tea Party with Marlene, weren't you paying attention? :monster:

The only stereotype that I really see Barret fill is that of the JRPG tough angry guy who's really a softy at heart. He fits way more into that than of some racist black picture.

So the fact he looks and acts like B. A. Baracus is a mere coincidence? (something openly admitted by the creators themselves).

As for his Compilation design, the net is...weird...but I'd hardly say that's stereotypical. I've never seen anyone of any color wear something like that.

Which you could say for the majority of the cast. That's why we have cosplay. That doesn't deny that Barret looks more like a gangsta in AC than he does the rough-edged action hero from the OG.

I didn't really think anything of the cornrows either, would you have felt better if he styled his hair like Cloud's? :monster:

Yup. Those are Barret's only two options...

There's a multitude of hairstyles Barret could have had instead of choosing a stereotypically black hairstyle which clashes with his character.

I should add that it appears Naora & Nozue had the most input on Barret's makeover, not Nomura.

And you know for all the shit the writers get for Tifa being "just a mom," no one ever seems to notice that she's the only hero in the movie to START a fight. She throws the first punch.

I don't believe the argument is Tifa is "just a mum". It's simply that this particular side of her character has been overplayed, like most of the Comp characters.

Also, what Dacon said.

The :monster: tends to imply I was being facetious. I'm not sure how cornrows "clash" with his character, but I'd take the crew cut from the game over them, sure.

ew no. I did not like Barret's flattop, lol. (Forgivable since it was sort of the style at the time). I actually liked the cornrows. But personally I think a boring old, regular close cut would have been best.

And how does Barret look more gangsta in AC? Is it the cornrows? Cause I've never seen a gangsta wear a mesh top with a puffy vest before. Otherwise he's just wearing pants & boots, which is what he wore in the OG. Everything else is the same: the tattoos, the earring, the gunarm (cept now he has a hand), the dogtags, the glove, the beard...

And anyway, I don't think Force is saying that Barret is completely without stereotypical qualities. But most of what clowd is presenting as intentional stereotyping is just stupid.

I don't think Barret is a stereotype anymore than how any of the other characters are at face value... Cids an angry redneck foul mouth abusive husband type in the first few scenes.

Its as stereotyprical as you want to make it, its a game.... it was never made to be intentionally offensive towards anybody. The writers proberbly took notes from sucessful American movies when writing diolouge and characters. Many of which had the steretypical black man in, Ie Murphey, Prior, Rock, Tucker.

Is the creator of this thread a arsey white person trying to make the world a better place, or a black person looking for racism where there is none?

Y'know, I'm starting to believe it's nigh-on impossible to create any form of media (be it video games, movies, etc) without stereotypes, if you look at it abstractly.

I mean, you can distill pretty much any character into a set of tropes and recreate a movie from that, :monster:.

Buut this is coming from a guy who effectively gets paid to abstract things.
