Blade Runner 2049

Same. I don't care for Ryan Gosling; he looks weak and bland. I doubt the writing will reach the same levels as the original. It all looks as if I've seen it before.

What they need to do is find something else that Philip K. Dick wrote (not difficult to find) and turn that into a movie.

A Scanner Darkly was all right — couldn't shake the feeling throughout that if they had just not bothered with the fake animation effect, the whole thing would have been a good deal better, but it was a good watch.

Total Recall (original) — a classic. That's how you Hollywood-ize a PKD story.

Even Martian Time-Slip would work

but I think we all know that Ubik would make a great movie.

There's a whole host of untapped potential in science fiction. The Forever War, Ringworld, Dragon's Egg.

Even Mass Effect would make a good movie. Provided that they opted for femshep. Played by that woman from Prometheus/Girl with Mythical Reptile Body Art. I can see her nutting a Krogan, she has an interesting face that would suggest a more globalised future Earth, she's young enough to fit the bill and she's ripped enough to pass for a soldier. And we know that she could be paragon or renegade.

Other potentials include Jada Pinkett Smith, Zoe Saldana, maybe Tilda Swinton if it's a biotic shep because she's a bit spindly for a soldier, and she'd make a good Asari.

If they did the idiotic thing and went maleshep, I guess it would have to be that dude from Arrival/Avengers. or Tom Hardy. actually no, Idris Elba would make a great manshep, but if hollywood's still racist then he would also work as Anderson as well.

Gyllenhaal would make a good psycho/asshole shep but Hollywood won't go that route so why bother. besides he'd be better as Garrus.

Wrex... Vin Diesel's voice + CGI. Or hunka chunka shamoke from Riddick 3.

Garrus... Gyllenhaal.

Saren. Tough one. I'd say Gary Oldman but Saren's more of a tank than a mage. ah, now I know: McConaughey. he would do a good job. 'nilas, you jerk off? how many times? nah them's rookie numbers son' *boom*

Cumberbatch as Sovereign, Hugo Weaving as Harbinger.

Miranda and IM's voice actors can play themselves. Martin Sheen is a bit podgy for IM but the voice is irreplaceable. Viggo Mortensen with Sheen's voice somehow. Mortensen in Eastern Promises is a good visual match for IM. mcconaughey could work for IM as well as Saren.

fuck the other humans because they're irrelevant

black stormtrooper as jacob

rob lowe/matt damon as kaidan

justin long as that guy who dies like a bitch in first ten minutes of ME1.

ashley can be... i dunno. dr. cuddy actress is a good facial match but not a convincing soldier. though neither is ashley 'kill-her-on-virmire-without-a-moment's-hesitation' williams.

madonna as that asari justicar whose name I never remember.

joker. seth green is joker.

daisy ridley/another-suitably-wide-faced-but-attractive-woman as liara tony pony. actually no, jennifer lawrence, correct body type and looks good in blue.

richard gere as unimaginative-leap-from-thanatos-named, sensitive, dying assassin.

hmm, that leaves mordin. who's that guy who plays spindly mary jane smoking losers in at least a dozen movies? donny j qualls or something. fassbender could work if there's any movie budget left and he takes a puff of helium.

patrick swayze as stationary indoctrinated husk. he should be at the right stage of decomposition to only require some amazon fairy lights to be attached.

legion's voice as legion.

either way, the only people who should touch Mass Effect are Christopher Nolan or Guillermo del Toro. Without a doubt, Mass Effect is a story that needs the Inception noise and Nolan's sober gravitas.

and yet and at the same time I can see del Toro getting the humour, aliens and costumes bang on. Doesn't overuse CGI, another important point. Plus, Hellboy 1 already had the Lovecraftian, Reaper-esque element with the squiddy dudes coming through the portal; and del Toro grasps the bro squadron aspect well.

I don't care for Gosling. But Keanu Reeves? No way. That would be awful.

I'm think the new trailer looks good. Looks that is. I have no idea about the plot. Looks like it might just be the same story with a slight twist. Which will be disappointing.

But in terms of aesthetics I think it looks cool. Maybe not as gritty as Blade Runner, but at least this is set in the future of the first film so it makes sense if things look a little different.

But some random yuppy? Don't care. Doubly don't care because Ryan Gosling is the worst actor on the screens today.

To be fair, Harrison Ford had a very particular sort of star power personality back when Blade Runner was being made :monster: Of course, the caliber of the films he starred in is slightly different but Ford was a rising superstar with a handsome face back then too, lol

I guess Tom Cruise would be an option, that guy does sci-fi and doesn't age because he's a spaceman.

Just watched Black Out on youtube. Really interesting. I loved the Animatrix, and this ticks the same boxes.

The whole thing is worth listening to, but he starts the specific, very non-spoiler commentary on Blade Runner 2049 at 23:57. That's kinda the best summary of how I feel about it at the moment, because it feels like I need to chew on it more to adequately talk about it in specifics.

Just watched Blade Runner Black Out 2022 animated short. I was pleased.

When I first watched Blade Runner a little less than a decade ago, I was extremely disappointed. I was expecting an experience that would grab me by my core, for I had heard only praise for the movie. Upon watching it I was BORED. So. Very. BORED. One of the more boring movie experiences I've ever had.

However I think if I watched the movie today I'd appreciate it more. I've watched so many videos dissecting the story and how the movie is filmed that I know what to pay attention to. If my impression is correct, Blade Runner is more of a "high-brow" science fiction movie and needs to be watched as such.

This is probably why I enjoyed the animated short. I am so familiar now with the "tropes" of Blade Runner that I've developed a fondness for them. I also appreciate the Vangelis (or Vangelis-type) music in a more conscious way now. PLUS the experience was condensed into 12 minutes where plenty of stuff happened, thus amending some of my issues with the original movie.

Just saw it. The cinematography is amazing. I think I'm going to have to dig into some more of roger deakis' films. Everyone just go see the movie. I can imagine it being polarising, but I loved it.

Is its pacing and atmosphere similar to the original? It's one of my all-time favorite movies, and I've been on the fence about whether to bother with this sequel.

Tres, if that's the case you will LOVE this. Really, Adam Savage is one of the biggest Blade Runner geeks ever, and that video I posted is the best non-spoiler review ever. (It was recorded when he was first allowed to talk about his feelings on the film, because he saw an advance screening. They don't cover plot or characters at all).

Seriously. You NEED to go see it ASAP and literally don't find out anything about it, and go in as blind as possible. It's goddamn incredible.

It's like they've taken the best parts of the original, Her and A.I. I think you'll really like it.

The film still opened at #1, and made a good bit so far (~$81million overall), but given that the film is almost 3 hours long – which limits the number of showtimes and availability compared to other films, and that the original film didn't make money either, it's not TOO surprising. Unfortunate that it's not a massive box office success right out of the door, but I don't know if I really expected it to be.

This is one where I'd expect to see the positive reviews and word of mouth do much more for it than an opening Friday – especially with the original being very similar in its performance.
