Finished up Act One of Bulletstorm and delved into the first chapter of the second. I've also gone into the Anarchy mode quite a bit. This game is probably what most thought it would be from the get-go: a fun shoot-em-up with all of its focus on your skills and kills, but little story to be seen. A compelling one, anyway.
The whole first act backtracks where you were, what you've done and how you got into the mess of the res t of the game. I won't go into any great detail, but you're a soldier/assassin-turned-pirate/fugitive because of some shitty deal with the armed forces unit you used to be in. The backstory shows your squad and builds up to landing on the planet where the whole of the game takes place. You'll probably hear in a lot of expert reviews that it honestly seems like the story was tagged on after they made the rest of the game to give it some sense of coherency. You'll hear it because it's true. Jennifer Hale's character is showing promise of offering some good banter, whereas most of the humour in the first act came solely from Gray's foul mouth (which lacks good one-liners thus far).
While the plot isn't a gem, the creativity involved with your kills certainly shows potential. Playing in both the "Horde" mode of this game's MP and some of the SP, I think I can say that it is certainly exciting to see all of what you can pull off in earning points for shooting a guy's arm off, throwing him up into the air and slamming him back down to the ground and everything in between. The listing of all potential skill kills isn't nearly infinite, but it also doesn't feel like you'll be at a loss for variety in the immediate future. Granted, it seems more exciting to exercise your killing options in MP since it isn't following a linear pattern of increased skill as the game progresses and enemies become more frequent. The one big downside, is that WHERE the limit for creativity allowed in the game's execution mechanics is on display at all times. In MP, I am fairly sure the entire list is readily available. The SP offers skill kills as they become possible according to where you are in the story. Some deal with environment, others with weapons, et cetera of course.
The way to get upgrades and such for your weapons is that you pay for them with all of the skill points from your kills. I personally like this little system. Even though you should want to in the first place, the demand for points forces you to be open to different ways of taking out each enemy that runs at you. You really, REALLY won't get very far if you insist on offing every single guy by decorating him with bulletholes.
A LOT of the game will most likely remind you of Gears, if you've played the games. Even if they're just glimpses, they tend to stick out and are often. I personally could tell this would be a Gears clone of sorts from the start, but I really don't have feelings one way or the other about it. Speaking of the similarities, pay close attention to the default loadout of your MP character.
Almost forgot to mention the scenery. The vivid colours and scope of some of the backdrops are wonderful. They certainly aren't anything new (to me, anyway), but it is certainly nice that while the plot may be dull, the atmosphere pops out and doesn't let you mistake an enemy for a rock due to their being the same shade of greyish brown.
Bulletstorm is definitely preferable when playing with friends, but that is definitely not to say that you can't have fun on your own. It helps that even for the SP, there are leaderboards for the Echo Mode. You can go back and rack up higher scores for the levels and see where you are amongst your XBL/PSN friends.
If there's one thing going for this game, it's that this is the gateway to more games rewarding you on how you kill an enemy rather than how many enemies you can off. This is the first game that I can recall that does this with such a great level of detail.
If you want something to play for shits and giggles and just enjoy something different from your generic shooter, I'd say pick this up. It helps if you're really into EPIC Games as a publisher.
It's really late, had a long day and am le tired, so I apologise if this sounds like shit.
Don't know what my review sounds like to you guys, but I overall enjoy the game. I laugh like a maniacal child when I get new or just really awesome kills. Or any kill that isn't just the enemy keeling over from my bullets.
