You can still edit posts within 24 hours of making them. The reason for the restriction afterwards is because of what four letters tard did - someone who got pwned in a debate could easily go back and hide all their poasts out of spite or something. It's basically to preserve the integrity of old poasts and shit. Though if you think editing old poasts should be allowed for the general populace and just disallowed for people who abuse it, then fair enough, make a thread about it and we'll see what people think.

When the board refused to agree with him on his "translation" of various elements, he went and edited all his posts out to a series of dashes. So yeah, this is just to prevent abuse like that in the future.
