Christmas & New Year TV

I'm not sure about the rest of the world but in Britain there's usually fab things on at Christmas. So I was wondering what you guys have been watching & falling in love with?

Or am I an old fart stuck in the days of 1 TV, no remote & 4 channels (one of which was in Welsh & stopped very early due to not having enough Welsh TV made! :P )

Esio Trot - Ok I'm a massive Roald Dahl fan. I always have been & always will be and I often think that I tend not to read very much because no one is quite a good a writer as he. I've read all his books & short stories & biographies, forgotten them & read them all again! (I'm currently in the process of forgetting them for the third time so I can read them again which is just what one has to do when one's favourite author has selfishly popped his bloody clogs!)

I'm not so into the soppy stories he did but I was wrapped & yes... cried like a chick unashamedly. Judy Dench & Dustin Hoffman & James Corban were brilliant but I think the thing I love about it is the style of speaking they kept true to. You can hear Roald Dahl's time, culture & oh idk nostalgia I guess in the way Mrs Silver speaks & it's just simply the most marvelous thing in the world ever.

The Wrong Mans (series 2) I nearly had a sex wee when I saw this was on. The first series was one of those things that I clicked in boredom with no expectations then wanted to literally glue my eyes & ears to the screen. I wouldn't say I'm a James Cordon fan until I saw this series. Fucking hell British humour/drama imo at its best. I think Ami will back me up in saying I'm very hard to please TV wise, so when I say go watch it - go watch it bitches! But it's linear so you have to see it Series 1 ep1-5 the Series 2 ep 1-2 in sequence or nothing makes sense.

Skyfall Ok I'm back on the Bond train! I like the old Bond films, there always seemed to be one on TV when I was a kid & I think I may have even done a Bond marathon once in China! :faint: When Brosnan came onto the scene I wasn't very impressed, but could get along with it to a point. Casino Royal made me realise how resistant to change I am in the Bond format! And after that film I snubbed Bond. But Skyfall has me back on board, all is forgiven, carry on! I was actually blown away with how good it was & would even put it among the best. I need to go watch the Quantum Summer Solstice one now & they better not fuck it up!

All that is cool but the ultimate Xmas film of all time for me will be Ghostbusters. (ok and Die Hard a very close second.) I cba to explain why & don't even know if xmas tv is a thing with online t nowadays. But I likes it :D

So what you been watchin & why? & what's you ultimate xmas season TV?

It's mainly soaps for me, but I am in the middle of watching the final ever Miranda episode and it's so bittersweet. Did watch the Doctor Who episode as well.

I watched Black Mirror. That was cheerful  I think Charlie Brooker should stick to writing those because I've become irritated by him of late, and I used to be a huge fan.

Other than that I hardly got the chance to watch anything else :sadpanda:

@Cab I agree Ghostbusters is somehow christmassy. Definitely in my top 5 films of all time:monster:

My ultimate christmas TV would involve Monty Python - Holy Grail and Life of Brian. Trading Places (which I just remembered I managed to watch the other night!) and Fargo.

As for tv shows, I wouldn't mind them showing the Vicar of Dibley episodes where she marries Richard Armitage, even though I normally can't be arsed with it I just want to look at his face :monster:

Oh and the christmas specials of the League of Gentlemen, and the Office which always makes me cry at the end.

I haven't watched normal television in years, but when I did my favourite thing about Christmas on the main 5 channels was (and still is I suppose) the classics:

The Sound of Music
It's a Wonderful Life
The Wizard of Oz
etc.

In Scotland there used to be a special episode of Chewin' the Fat/ Still Game at new year, and then there's the scottish comedy football one which is always hilarious that I forget the name of. I always watch the Edinburgh cannon/ Jackie Bird for Scottish new year though. Auld lang syne and all that.

EDIT: I had no idea until recently that New Year is a bigger deal in Scotland than it is in most other places. Any excuse to drink, I suppose we made it a big deal for that reason.

Hogmanay explanation

(also didn't realise until recently that Hogmanay is a Scottish word)

Christmas just isn't the same for me without Doctor Who, Home Alone, The Goonies and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I don't feel complete over the festive period without having watched those.

Having said that though, suddenly seeing the Back To The Future trilogy reminded me how good they were and how much I missed them.

I watched Black Mirror. That was cheerful  I think Charlie Brooker should stick to writing those because I've become irritated by him of late, and I used to be a huge fan.

Black Mirror was good, though I felt that the christmas special wasn't as strong as the last series.

Yeah Black Mirror was pretty awesome it worked as a decent film in its own right too.
I've just been watching old Star Trek. I saw the newest apes movie which was just average. Yeah I recently got back into Bond, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the Quantum/Spectre storyline now it looks like they are completing it.

Someone usually uploads it on you tube. - maybe it needs a bit of time? Check out the big fat anniversary quiz too, I'm watching that now. <3

3/4 through Skyfall. I like this format, tbh I think Craig fits my idea of Bond better than Brosnan. More Agent 47, less pretty boy.
