Boston Tea Party!

So that finally I can sit down and drink some goddamn Mountain Dew tea.

Tea > Edea

Cid's agent has called. In an attempt to revitalize his image, he has asked you all to please sit down in your chairs, and drink your decaf coffee. Apparently, caffeinated drinks cause him to swear excessively.

Edea has never been seen Drinking tea. Cid's rage ensues

I'm British. I have to vote for the forced tea meme.

Tea.

SIT YOUR ASS DOWN ON THAT CHAIR AND DRINK YOUR GODDAMN TEA!!!!!!

Point of thread - am I alone in just not getting it? I can't stand Cid, but fine, tastes of characters vary. But this line seems to be memetic among FF7 fans, and I really am at a loss for why. It isn't particularly funny or memorable IMO, so....yeah. Am I the only guy who doesn't find this line funny? So ,who's gonna reply with a tea joke?

Do we know whether it's blackproper tea, or green tea?

It doesn't have to be funny to be awesome though. The apparent contradiction in showing enough hospitality to want to serve tea to your guests but at the same time exhibiting no decency or respect whatsoever is what makes it memorable.

nothin wrong with green tea

unless you put milk and sugar in it you revolting heathen

Was that line supposed to be funny? I mean, Cid is supposed to be an arsehole when we first meet him. An embittered, unpleasant, wife-abusing, disappointed-in-life, middle-aged, foul-mouthed shit. Scope for character development in video games being pretty limited, I think this was a wonderful line, because it suggested that underneath that embittered surface he was a better man once, before Shinra damaged him; a man who knew how to be hospitable and generous. Like everyone else in the party, he is embarking on a journey of self-re-discovery (sorry for the sick-making cliche) in which he learns to let go of his egoistical anger and resentment and finds the things in life that are truly worth living and dying for. All things considered, then, I think that line is pure gold.

I love Cid.

Precisely. Remember the line is soon followed by "Or ain't my hospitality good enough for ya?" Suggesting that he actually believes he's being hospitable.

Cid is incredible. Only he could make being a chain-smoking-tea-drinker cool.

Embittered and Unpleasant, but his abuse is purely verbal and directed at everyone, not just Shera. I'm not saying he's not verbally abusive, I just find it wrong to define it as limited to directed at Shera.

He's also 32. Younger than Barret. Shit, since when is 32 middle aged?

I always took the line as Cid fussing over proper etiquette than actual tea myself. I've never understood why everyone thinks he drinks tea all the time.

I always thought that was kind of sarcastic from him: a "you're in MY @#$!ing house, so you either deal with me and listen or clear out" sort of thing.

It's like "Elementary, my dear Watson!" for Sherlock Holmes or "Scotty, beam me up!" for Star Trek.

Holmes never said that and Captain Kirk only said that once (with a ton of different variations after and before).

It just sticks with people.

Shit, since when is 32 middle aged?

In a world where a four year old is left on her own to mind a bar, ten year olds become Turks, and fifteen year olds are recruited into the army, I would say being 32 means you've got one foot in the Lifestream [plus, you're lucky to have lived that long].

If he's a real man, it'll be black tea. ;) Being British myself, I find Cid freaking hilarious. Don't get me wrong, I love green tea, but growing up having a father who loves nothing better than a good old cuppa Tetley's tea, there's nowt better.

LicoriceAllsorts, your summary of Cid's character is spot-on. He really is a typical jerk that is the result being screwed around by a big, cut throat corporation that creates bitter men and richer executives. The fact that he does "discover himself" (and also some feelings for Shera :D) makes him an even more lovable character when he tries to express those changes/feelings.

In Cid's opinion, which should probably not be contended with, it seems that tea is the ultimate manly drink.
