Cloud's strength

Cloud never tried to get into SOLDIER either, he thought about it but had doubts. Considering he KO'd protecting Tifa the first time at the Nibelheim reactor I'm not surprised either. But the infusion of Mako into his body over 4 years and his strong belief that he is First Class standard is what makes him strong in FFVII. In AC/C he is so much stronger again because he did so much fighting in FFVII anyway, and was the only party member you had to keep in.

The only thing I don't get is how he was able to lift Sephiroth up in Crisis Core/Last Order after pulling the blade further into his own chest. That'd be one serious adrenaline rush. (Not like it needs to make sense).

No I do believe Cloud really did try out for SOLDIER and didn't make it. It's just not covered in Crisis Core.

He did, I believe he mentions it in FFVII, and If all else fail we could always ask the UOG, for it is never wrong.

Exactly.
Don't the rest of you guys know that love can do anything?
And anyway, he promised to protect her, but he failed, thanks to loony Sephiroth. That really made his blood boil.
The best way to push Cloud to the limit is by messing with his loved ones. I'm surprised, actually, that they didn't program the game the way.
