Coming soon(ish): unofficial ff7 sequel: Final Fantasy VII Ultimo

so i recently went on a indie 2d rpg binge and i came across a game called FF7: Dark Cloud. it's a 2d standalone sequel (made before the release of doc and ac so there are conflicts) made using rpgmaker 2000 (i think it's that version). anyway, i saw it and was inspired to make my own inspired by an idea for a fanfic i had had. it will be set after doc and will aim to tie up loose ends, provide some serious fan service, and explore the origins of SOLDIER. features to include:
-the return of weiss and elfe
-the rebirth of sephiroth (as a side note. not the final boss at all. just it wouldn't seem right to have a ff7 game without him in it. and i mean, hell, if he can come back once he can do it again, right?)
-genesis as a playable character along with cloud (duh) and vincent (main characters. there will be others that will be in the party for short periods of time)
-a brand new adversary in form of the first SOLDIER. his name is Proteus (yes, that does explain my username) and when he was enhanced the procedure hadn't been perfected yet. the amount of mako pumped into his body was roughly 10x what became standard. while making him incredibly powerful, it also drove him completely insane. he was put in cryostasis for future study. and now he's escaped.
-zack and aerith to cameo. not gonna tell how at this moment.
-optional mega boss(es)? oh yes.
-new locations

Sounds kind of cool. :)

However, I'm not sure about bringing Sephiroth back. I guess it all really depends on how you approach it, but bringing him back might be overkill.

well, here's a spoiler if you care to find out what i intend to do with him:
sephiroth will return because he wants to rule the planet still. he can't do that if proteus destroys it. so he wants to stop proteus. he fails however. proteus will literally rip him in half. it should also be noted that sephiroth and proteus have a history. proteus escaped once before and sephiroth was tasked with bringing him back. he succeeded, but at the cost of being wounded so gravely he was in the infirmary for over a month. sephiroth actually harbors a fear of proteus because of his power. basically, he's only going to serve as a measurement of how powerful proteus is. a kind of "oh, crap, he just did that to sephiroth. what is he going to do to me?"

I'm really not sure about Proteus. Reeks of God Mode Stu.

I wasn't going to put it quite as harshly, but still I see where Aki is coming from.

The idea of a SOLDIER who is more powerful than Sephiroth just doesn't jive. Are you sure you really need to bring him back at all?

Proteus7

Rookie Adventurer
well, as i said, one of the purposes of this game is fan service. seems the fans don't want him back so i'll leave him out. saves me the trouble of trying to figure out an original way for him to return again. how about the idea of just revealing a history between the two to plant proteus in ff7 past? yay or nay?

Proteus7

Rookie Adventurer
also, on the note of fan service, the plot as is is very loose so feel free to throw out any ideas you guys have. if i use it, i'll credit you.

Tennyo

Well, the idea of them having a history could be okay. I still don't think Proteus should be more powerful than he was, though.

well, i think it makes sense that this new enemy be more powerful. after all, the protagonists are more powerful now for facing past adversaries so it stands to reason that for there to be real conflict a new enemy must be more powerful still. but i get what you're saying. i could definitely decrease that gap in power, just have him on ABOUT equal ground as sephiroth. yeah?

Tennyo

Higher Further Faster
Maybe.

But do keep in mind that he doesn't need to be more powerful to be a threat. Sometimes all you really need is to just be a tad bit smarter than the hero. :)

What is his master plan, and how does he hope to pull this off?

Well, you could always use the same excuse that Persona 3: The Answer and apparently AC used and assume that the party just hasn't trained in all those years because there's really no need to.

did i mention the plot is very loose? lol. haven't figured it all out yet. i think best as i go along. again, all ideas are welcome. and you definitely have a point about how he can be a threat. already it has me taking it in a new direction. many thanks!

Alright, look.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but I'm going to feel disingenuous if I don't speak up. You're making this in RPG Maker, correct? I've been in the scene for a long time, and while there are many projects in RPG Maker that are absolutely fantastic displays of writing and artistry and creativity, some which can complete with professional games, there are, on the other hand, many shitty attempts that are little better than the collective scribbling of middle school fanfic writers. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy fangames are known for being really, really awful. Because they usually are.

Like, it's epidemic here. What you're pitching I've heard a thousand times and it's usually never really great. I'm just being honest with you here.

Here's your metric. Final Fantasy Essence. Assuming it gets finished, it just might be one of the finest indie rpg maker games out there, and its one of the best, if not the best looking FF fangames I've ever seen. If what you're making doesn't chalk up to this, well, to say it's going to get laughed out of the park is an understatement.

I gotta keep it real, dude. I'm not saying give up. But I gotta let you know what the scene is looking like. If you're doing it all for yourself, and you're going 'fuck an audience, this is all about me', hey, it's all good. But if you expect more than a single digit download number and ridicule, please heed my words. I've been in the indie game scene since I was like, twelve. I know what I'm saying here and you'd be wise to listen.

true, but as i said, the three main characters are going to be cloud, vincent, and genesis. of those three, genesis is really the only one who might be rusty because he locked himself in a cave for several years. but could you actually picture cloud or vincent not staying sharp? i somehow can't.

no worries, mate. honesty is appreciated. and i know there will be alot of haters. hell, alot of people hate that ANY sequels were made, official or otherwise. but i know SOME people will enjoy it and i know i will enjoy it. now it's just a matter of trying to figure out what the other fans want so i can make it as fan friendly to the general population as possible.

My advice: Take out Proteus completely. It may sound harsh, but there are already tons of FF7 additions people don't care about. Making Genesis a villain from going insane from all the time he spent in the cave makes more sense and doesn't add more characters that fans are tired of.

Make a character who doesn't already have a game be a main character, like Cid or Red XIII. Both are fan favorites that people want to hear more about.

That's mostly what I can think of for now.

Cid or Red XIII wouldn't make sense, though. The story would have to be completely different.

Giving them bigger parts, however, is a fantastic idea. :)

Why not Barret or Tifa as additional playable characters then? They both fight alongside Cloud in the WRO.

honestly? i was originally going to have genesis be along proteus. but then someone told me that it's established in one of the ultimania guides that genesis is now an official hero. he got what he wanted: he stopped his deterioration. and he became friends with zack in the end. i don't want to create any conflicts with established canonocity.

The interesting point here is that Genesis is waiting to be used by the Planet, and has been sleeping under Midgar, and waiting to be awakened. With no WEAPONs, he is likely the Planet’s final defense against Jenova. If there can be a truly generated Jenova Copy, the main question is whether or not Genesis as a Jenova Copy could overcome the original, like Cloud does with Sephiroth, or if he would then fall under its control.
make the planet somehow think that Barret drilling for oil or some leftover deepground or whatever think that they are working against it and you have yourself an antagonist.

Proteus7

that is an interesting idea though. say i was only going to give really lengthy side quests for 2 of the other characters. would you say i should do it for cid and red xiii or someone else?

EDIT:
oh! i can definitely incorporate jenova and barret drilling causing problems into the story. maybe not the planet reacting, but we've all seen enough horror and scifi movies to know how often dangerous things are accidentally dug up.

EDIT:
also i like your idea of genesis possibly being controlled by jenova. it lets me have the best of both worlds. i can have him as an enemy for part of it and later on regain control.

My advices:
Watch the entire "Extra Credits" series. It will help you understand just what games are about, their history, and the basic elements required to make a good game.

It's a very broad video series but it will teach you that creating games is no easy task and forming a good story is just one of many parts when you try to create an experience. Whether it's just a fanmade game or a huge corporate AAA game, their message holds true.

I do not design games myself, but even I can see that various red flags are waving here. Continue taking in advice from the fanbase, and ponder deeply on what people like Mog (dude in the background of guile's stage) says. I mean it, ponder DEEPLY.
